Seat belt regulations..

So i was crusing along in my car on a regular sunday night when a cop decides to pull me over for no reason other than the fact im rhd.. they dont like rhd's here.. so he puts me through an inspection.. i got busted for a straight through muffler, non dot headlights and non mvss seat belts...

i've put my silencer back in my exhaust and i sourced out some dot headlamps so im good in that department but im a bit stuck on my seat belt issue. i've heard of people who just sew tags on, or get belts from other 90s cars (mx6 or probe?).. but i'd rather keep my stock fd belts. i believe they have to meet standard "mvss 209", but there is no labeling on the jdm belts that say they meet this.. what they do say is the jap rating "jis d4604"

just wondering if there is anybody whos been through this before, or if there is any way to find out if the jap rating matches the north american rating? i would much rather prove that these belts meet up with the safety regulations than change them.

any advise/help is much appreciated - thank you

Would USDM seatbelts not work? There really isnt a difference in the belts from RHD to LHD is there?

i dont think i'd have a problem with the swap, im pretty sure they would work, but i would definitely have a problem sourcing usdm seatbelts here as they are more rare than rhd 7's. and brand new from mazda would just put a bigger hole than the already huge rotor sized hole in my wallet lol. was just hoping somebody went through this before and had info, i contacted mazda canada to see if they have any specs regarding this issue, i'll post any info i receive from them for future reference to

it sure did! but the winnipeg police hate rhd cars and are looking for any excuse to get them off the roads.. so seatbelts that work arent enough, they have to have cmvss certification labeled on the belt tag.. but i was hoping if i could prove that the standards are the same i could save time and $$

Fight it.
the cop is not a Certified mechanic ,so how does he know that the seat belts are "illegal"?

Agreed.

Also, if RIV says your car is approved for use in Canada, who are the Winnipeg Police to supercede their authority on such matters. Fight it.

if it passed inspection upon arrival, and then safetied to be on our roads, you should be fine, unless you've modified them.

and a cop is not a mechanic and and can't have a technical say on the matter.

definitely keep us posted
