RX7 Race Video

Just found this older race video from 2001 in the Ontario GT Challenge Series. It is somewhat pixelated, but still a good watch. I especially like the part at about 12:30 as I took off both mirrors on the car. Great battling all through the field. There are 2 other RX7's in the video, a white with black graphics FC with a small block Ford in it and an all white peri port FC.

FYI, the guy in the red Civic is Brad Flowers who went on to race an FD RX7 for Pettit in the World Challenge Series. My car was pretty stock and had the original 165,000 km S4 in it, so I was pretty speed challenged, but I was able to pull consistent 1:41.0's out of it.

Enjoy

The Swain 5.0 RX7 was part of the inspiration for my car. Mark and David were awesome about sharing information. Thanks! Now we just need a video showing Klaus blowing by the field every three laps lol

No kidding, that was an experience with him blowing past about 50 mph faster at any point on the track and Klaus was easy on me as he knew me.

Actually, the video is from the late lamented Ontario Challenge Cup for the slower GT2 cars and GT3 cars. We actually had a $5000 prize fund for each race and they paid down to 10th overall. There were usually 40 or so cars in each race and out of the 5 races I was in I got the Pig into the Top 10 three times and won $250 each time. Most money I had won since the old Firehawk days.

That was Ahmed Khodkar. He has 2 of those cars. One has a monster tricked out NA 2.8L 6 cyl in the super trick 240Z. The one in the video is another version, both cars are identical looking, with an NA Buick V6 Indy Lights motor placed inside with a Saenz dogbox. Both cars are extremely fast and professionally built and Ahmed drives them very well.

I constantly have to keep pushing back on sticking my spare Ford V6 I have into my RX7. It is light and a fresh pro-built 2.5l NA motor making 320 hp and 230 ft lbs of torque. The car would sound and go almost as fast as Ahmed's and I have all the pieces except for a T5.

Maybe after I blow this 13B up, LOL.

This is the fall back position if the beer keg gives me a lot more problems or if it grenades.

Guy stuck one of these motors into a Miata using an RX7 drivetrain. Should work okay in mine.

V6 Concept

Ford Engineers even looked at the car and tested it. My Pig should be plenty fast with this setup.

That gives me ideas... Duratec 3.0 V6s make decent power out of the box, especially the late ones in the Fusion/Escape, and are probably a pretty cheap salvage... I wonder if there are important differences between transverse and longitudinal versions like in the Lincoln LS?
Probably an LSx swap would be easier and cheaper in the end.

The engines are the same blockwise. The only differences are in the intake manifold setup. If I ever loose my mind and swap in my 2.5l, I am going to do a whole ITB setup like they used to run in the BTCC. I will see if I can dig up a photo.

The 3.0l with a small S/C on it would easily make close to 350 hp with well over 250 ft lbs of torque and be able to use pump fuel. It would also be lighter than the LSX swap and have better weight distribution using the TII trans and missing 2 cylinders.

Another Couple

Go to this link and you can watch a race I did in 2000 in my #23 RX7. Great battling all through the field and I loved the fact that I won $250 and got a nice trophy for finishing 10th overall and 2nd in GT3. What is cool is the conversation I have with Dave after the race where he tells me that I finished 2nd, where I thought for sure I had broken out. On a 1:42.00 breakout, my fastest lap was a 1:42.015. Pretty close to breaking out. I love the outside pass I pull on the CRX at about 3:17 and how I just about drive off the track in traffic in Turn 2 while I am tailing the Chan RX7 that later became Al Balinsky's car.

The last segment shows a few race laps during the ALMS Support race we did back in 2004 in the Touring GT Series. The track was super sticky and I managed to pull a bunch of low 1:38.0's out of the car and my fastest lap was a 1:38.09.

Finally, you can go to my website at Nummelin Motorsports Group - Main Page and see some new shots of the RX7 and Cougar that I have downloaded.

Just thought a little summer fun would help on this very, very cold day.

Some of you may remember my story about my first Pro race weekend. This was the one about where the gas fumes started to fill the interior of the car and my co-driver got sick and I ended up having to drive for over 2 hours throwing up in my helmet..... all the normal stuff. At the end of the race I got tagged in the passenger rear corner going into Turn 1 at Mosport and was turned into the inside wall at about 70 mph. I knocked down the wall, then started the car back up and finished the last 2 laps of the race.

Well anyways, I found a photo of the car after it finished the race. Man those Suzuki Swifts were tough little cars. The second shot was from my very first race ever. I was extremely fortunate that when I started racing cars, I was on a full free sponsorship plan from NTN Bearings and Suzuki Canada. I thought everyone raced that way.

Man, I thought we were cool, LOL.
