This is likely unhelpful but when I put both my FD's in my name the MTO had no value for my cars. Another words the tax I paid was on the amount of my receipts. I can assure you they were both extremely low.
Perhaps yours will fall in to this situation as well.

try a different MTO office. When i brought my FD into the country, the barrie office just used the book value since my receipt was less. I don't see how they can make you get an appraisal so that you can pay taxes on a purchase amount you didn't make. I know that doesn't really help, and the situation's a ****-me-off, but you don't have too many options. I'd try another office first.

anything older then a 90 now requires an appraisal when registering unlees its not from this country or your province. but you can go to your mto office and ask for an appraisal form and any licensed dealer can fill it out for you

You can get a Buddy that goes to Car Auctions to write you up an Appraisal.
Actually anyone that has a dealer license can write you up one,and you can get them to put whatever you want on it,IF you want the value low. That way it would save you Tax...but you didn't hear this from me....SHHHH!...haha!

The appraisal process is a double edge sword, you want a low appraisal for the MTO for tax purposes, less taxes is a really good thing.
And a high appraisal for Insurance for the true value of the car if it ever gets stolen or written-off.
I used a local guy in town Roland Giardetti but he may be too far as they charge for traveling time, but he gave me a great price of $150 with two really professional looking reports with the car history, lots of glossy pictures and nicely bound cover, my insurance was happy with it. Joe at classicauto in Hagersville, Ontario is a local member on this forum and he too does appraisals.

Insurance Fact:
An apprasial on your car means nothing without an OPCF 19a endorsement on your policy.
If your (estimated value) $20,000 RX7 gets written off without an OPCF 19a, you will get the book value for your car.
An OPCF 19a is an Agreed Value of Automobile(s) Endorsement. This endorsement will pay the amount of the appraisal in the event of a total loss.
You will pay extra for this coverage.

if the appraisal value is higher than what the underwriters deem to be the highest value they are willing to go, they will not insure the car either.
that was what my. insurance company informed me of, when i told them i was going to have an appraisal done on my car.

I've never paid more than $50 for an MTO appraisal.
Cloudpump's statement is accurate too. if this is a 20 year old FC it likely doesn't matter as your car is worthless in your insurance company's eyes. My insurance company basically dropped coverage on my GTR - they refused to do agreed value insurance and wanted me to pay over $100 a year for a maximum of $1000 liability for comprehensive coverage. I still have liability insurance but if anything happens to the car it's not covered. Now that I'm over 25 I'm trying to get it insured though one of the "classic" insurers but it's difficult to get coverage on stuff that's modified.

Liability coverage and comprehensive coverage have little to nothing to do with each other.
Liability coverage is a required coverage on any vehicle that is going to be operated (legally) on Ontario roads.
Comprehensive coverage has no "liability" factor to it. Comprehensive is protection to the vehicle in the event of fire/theft/weather-related/vandalism and a number of other specific perils. this coverage is to repair the vehicle in the event of any of these types of losses.
Liability refers to your negligent actions while operating a motor vehicle (when we're talking about auto insurance, liability refers to more things in a home insurance package or an umbrella policy).
This is a protection that will defend you in court in the event that you are being sued, or deemed legally responsible for certain types of losses.

it makes sense if you read it correctly.
Everything you said is accurate but you read my statement wrong. I said that my insurance company refuses to cover my car under comprehensive coverage for more than a maximum of $1000. They won't be liable to pay for more than $1000 in damages to it in the event of a total loss, and for that they wanted me to pay $100 a year (with a $500 deductable). So basically worthless insurance coverage.
They're still willing to insure the car under basic "liability" coverage for $1M or whatever I'm covered for.

What they charge for this coverage is up to them as it is an unregulated portion of the OAP 1.

I paid $50 for the appraisal for my FC also. The MTO actually gave me the card for the appraisal guy. It's not an in depth appraisal like what you'd do for insurance, those cost about $150.
PKock: You will definitely need an appraisal to transfer that '82.
And don't you need insurance to get temp plates?

Your insurance company is barred by law from declaring a maximum amount they will pay out for damages on the vehicle. If they are providing physical damage coverage on your vehicle they are required to repair the vehicle up to (or exceeding at their choice) the blue book value of the vehicle.
What they charge for this coverage is up to them as it is an unregulated portion of the OAP 1.

Last year when I brought home the 87 all I had to do was notify the insurance company and they let me know it was covered. I'm more thinking about how I'm gonna get this car home when I do get it as I dont have a trailer or truck. Anyone in Toronto wanna tow it to Barrie for me if I do get it? It would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks for the advice guys.

Sorry to bring back an old thread but FD's are getting old now.
I'm picking up my car on Friday and I think all this appraisal bs is a hassle.
Anyone have any recommendations (a friend preferably) in the Toronto area who can appraise the car for whatever I'm paying for. It's only fair we pay taxes on the actual amount and not some book value or overly inflated appraisal.
