Talking Rotary Future!!!!!!

Just read this today. Looks like the rotary may be the saviour of the automotive world.

Next-generation rotary
The rotary engine is the soul of Mazda. There will be a new normally-aspirated generation next year, featuring direct injection, a new chamber design, 23 per cent more displacement and more horsepower and torque produced from less fuel. The rotary is also at the centre of Mazda's intention to take a leadership role in hydrogen combustion. Hydrogen is the cleanest fuel possible, its combustion producing only pure water.

The rotary is uniquely suited to burning hydrogen because, unlike a conventional engine, it uses separate chambers for intake and combustion. The hydrogen can thus be injected into a relatively cool space, avoiding abnormal combustion caused by premature ignition in a hot intake port when it catches fire before the spark plug has a chance to properly ignite it.

Mazda has a fleet of eight dual-fuel, hydrogen-fed rotary-powered RX8 on lease to various government and other bodies. Their reliability has been excellent. The chief benefit over hydrogen vehicles from competitors has been the dual fuel capability allowing the RX8s to be used with less concern about proximity to a hydrogen filling station.

The next step in the program is to put a second generation of hydrogen vehicles on the road using a new version of the dual-fuel rotary engine installed in the Premacy (Mazda5 here). In addition to the more practical vehicle, the next-generation dual-fuel rotary development vehicles will also be hybrids. The rotary will be combined with a new electric motor, inverter and 350-volt lithium-ion battery pack working in series, resulting in a significant gain in performance and doubling the range from 100 to 200 km on a tank of hydrogen fuel.

The performance boost is much needed. The current hydrogen RX8 takes 18 seconds to accelerate to 100 km/h. The new one will do it in 11 seconds. The lower punch offered by hydrogen at this stage of development is clearly evident from behind the wheel. On the test track, I tried back-to-back runs in a dual-fuel RX8, reaching 134 km/h at the end of the straight on hydrogen and 179 km/h at the same point on gasoline! From a driveability standpoint, though, the lack of performance is the only thing that tells you this is not a normal engine.

Regards to the worshipers of the spinning triangle.

Eric

That would be the Renesis 16X they're talking about I think.

It's great that they have finally moved to aluminum "irons", but because they changed the eccentricity it means that we can't use any of the new parts in the older engines.

The hydrogen version is probably hype, like most hydrogen stuff. We've been promised that hydrogen is "10 years off" for the last 30 years (and probably even longer, but since I'm only just under 30 it's hard to remember a time during which I was not alive). It's funny though that they are bragging of using all kinds of extra technology to extend the range to 200KM, when pure battery electric vehicles can easily be made with a range of 400 miles.

....and all we'd need there is the engine sound playback through the sound system that Tesla Motors alluded to a while ago....

As long a it can be turned off as well. The sound of silence is almost as good as a rotary at full scream.

Years ago I watched a program on Discovery Channel that demonstrated a sound module that could be connected to any car. It monitored engine speed, road speed, throttle position and the gear and used these things to generate a new engine noise through the stereo system. You could choose between Ferrari, big V8, Porsche, etc. at the flip of a switch.
