regular paint job vs. 3 stage paint job @ mazda dealer ??
Here is the story. I need to paint a 99 spec wing in VR. First of all, I called up the body shop I usually go to, explaining the situation. Basically I told them that they should expect a bit of work to simulate the level of oxidation (reproduce the variance in color) to match up a 2 years old painting on the body. In the end, I was told that I was probably looking at $110-130 in cash, price including the prep work. My first reaction was “that’s kinda cheap…”.
On the other hand, I am also aware of the “3 stage mazda paint”, which is supposed to yield better quality. So I called up Scarboro Mazda…blablabla…somebody from the collision center told me he’s not exactly familiar with the 3 stage paint…fine….called Agincourt Mazda, this time the one answering my phone appeared to know what he was talking about. Long story short, the gentlemen from Agincourt Mazda told me that a good 3 stage paint job for a spoiler at this particular dealer is around $350 after tax.
I have very limited knowledge regarding painting issue. What do you think? Compared with a regular paint job, what an extra $220 dealer paint job gonna give me? I appreciate your time in advance. ^_^

Have the body shop do it. There is a reason it’s called a Stealership. They become the middle man and you hand them the extra $220.
give the body shop your vin and month year of production and they can let ok up the exact formula for your car color.
