Hi Gents:

I'm looking for a reputable shop (Toronto area) that can check/repair air conditioning (on my daily driver). Looking to avoid Crappy Tire and the Chevy Dealer at all costs.

Any recommendations?

If nothing is seriously wrong(ie broken lines, blown compressor, etc) I'd suggest getting a red tek kit and recharging it yourself. We sell these kits here in BC for about $80 can. and they include a leak sealer, 2 cans of refrigerant, and the valve adapters. They charge the system with much lower pressure so the leak that caused your R12 to leak out is usually not an issue. for example 16oz of red tek r12a and one can of leak sealer is equivalent to 46oz of r12. so system pressure is WAY down, cooling is as good as an R12 system, (much better than R134A I might add) and it's enviromentaly friendly, and 100% legal for DIY'ers in Canada.

Agree with the red tek recd - used it myself and it worked a treat - added a can of their oil to help lubrication, the leak stop and only used 1 can of coolant and icy cold air - all for 100 bucks which is what a regular shop will charge just to check the system - if you have a big leak they also sell a heavy duty sealant but the guy at the shop said the regular stuff works in most cases. i have had a small leak in my '85 for a while... got it changed over to the new stuff a few years back... maybe i will give this stuff a try as 2 shops think the leak might be under the dash somewhere..... and i'm NOT paying for them to remove the dash to find out!!

Took your advice and picked up a Red-Tek A/C recharge kit. It did the trick!! Straight forward to use and only took 1/2 hour of my time. Really been appreciating the cold air while driving on this long weekend.
