The rotary has greater potential then a piston engine. A piston engine has to reverse momentum which is extreamly inefficent. A rotary does not.

With regards to engine development the first internal combustion engine was actualy invented in the 1670's and woprked backwards. An explosion went off and pushed the piston up insdead of down. The Rotary is newer in design, but it also had the advantage of more modern metalurgy when it was created speeding up the design process. I would still say the rotary is around 10-25 years behind piston engine technology at this point of time.

All engines have their place as other said.

Gas turbines are far more efficient than piston or rotary, how come those never caught on in cars?

The formula doesn't reward a specific engine size and rev range, rather it simply measures torque/L at peak power output. Forced induction kind of breaks the comparison, since higher manifold pressures increase tq but are not accounted for in the formula.

y don't we cut the displacement for a F1 motor in half and pout it in our cars, they have incredible power for the fuel consumption, the reason they aren't, is b/c it's expencive.
i dunno a lot about gas turbines, but a LOT of independant test and production would have to be done, argo more money.
rotaries continue to see the light of day b/c of the enthusiest on this bored, shows to mazda that there is a demand for production, though very minor, in a world against gas prices, big blocks and honda kids. All of us putting our money into the aftermarket, then forces mazda to keep they're development ahead.

imma just add this cosworth engine dyno

F1 engines arn't very far off from the engines found in V12 Ferrari's and Lambo's. Obviously the production engines are catered more to reliability where as an F1 engine is ALL about performance. Every aspect of an F1 engine is performance.

But give us leaded fuels at the pump and the power potential skyrockets.

and it would cause acid rain to peal the paint off ur car. i dunno about u guys but i think propane should be replaced with 1:2 mixture of oxygen and hydrogen. give the reputation of LP fueled vehicals a kick right in the pants. and the great thing about using rocket fuel to power our cars is that u can make it in ur house!!!!!!!
