Out of Province Vehicle Purchase Questions?
Out of Province Vehicle Purchase Questions?
So I'm looking to buy a car in Quebec. But I'm not really sure on the procedures and such for ownership transferals. I believe if the car's in Ontario. I just have to provide signed UVIP and proof of insurance. However, I think it this situation, it gets more complicated than that. So can anyone clarify for me on buying out of province vehicles?
The only information I have found on the Ministry of Transportation website is the following:
If you have purchased a new unregistered vehicle/trailer purchased outside Ontario, the following documents are required:
* New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS) (if NVIS is not supplied by manufacturer a dealer's certificate of sale/bill of sale or certificate of origin is acceptable)
* application for registration—completed and signed
* Vehicle Import Form (only required if the vehicle is purchased outside Canada)
* insurance information
* plate portion of the permit, if registrant currently has Ontario licence plates.
* payment for retail sales tax (if the registrant is exempt from paying retail sales tax then the appropriate supporting documentation is also required)
I doubt there will be NVIS for the vehicle, It's a 1989.
This also does not mention if I am allowed to drive it after buying it as I doubt that I can get a 10-day permit without going back and forth a couple of times which is certainly time consuming.
Thanks for any help.

well, i know for one your going to need a temporary travel permit to drive the car from ontario the quebec. then you need out of province froms from the registry, and you have to take that form to dealership, and have them perfrom an out of province inspection, which is around 150 i think.
When buying cars in BC and bringing them to Saskatchewan, I just had to fill out the transfer of ownership papers with ICBC (their requirement - your beurocracy may vary), slap on a 1 week temp insurance & registration permit from SGI in the rear window, drive the car to Saskatchewan, and have it inspected at an SGI accredited shop. Once it passes safety inspection, it can be registered & plated.
