New Shoes.....

I got back this afternoon from some meetings and low and behold, I had a delivery waiting for me. The first set of NA Carrera tires had arrived from Argentina for me to test on the Cougar. The second set for the RX7 is supposed to arrive later this week or early next week. The Nummelin Motorsport Group is going to be testing these tires for the NA Carrera company and providing feedback on how they perform and last. We should be running them at Toronto Motorsport park July 11th. I am really really tempted to use the RX7 that day as with the revised gearbox and these tires, the car should be a bullet.

Interested to read your findings. Some more tire options that fit the FC will be welcome.

It will be a while until the tires are being marketed in North America, maybe next spring.

Exciting news is that Malcolm Strachan has agreed to drive the RX7 at Toronto Motorsports Park in July for us. Malcolm is a past top level competitor in the Canada Challenge Cup in everything from a Turbo RX7 to an extremely fast Corvette where he was as good as there was in that group. He is extremely experienced and very fast and we are lucky to get his opinions and viewpoint as well.

Should be a fun test day and now I just have to find a decent place to get all the tires mounted. Any ideas in the Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington area that wont cost an arm and a leg?

L Just received the tires for the RX7. They are super light, look great with very firm sidewalls and the rubber compound is very interesting. I need to get these mounted quickly so that both cars can run on them for the July 11th race day at Toronto Motorsports Park. Malcolm Strachan should have fun for sure. That will be good as he is a tried and tested shoe and should be able to run the car to its capabilities. I am thinking that we may swap cars for the final race, just to have fun, LOL. I really really want to run the RX7 on these tires with the new gearbox. It should be as fast or faster than the Cougar for sure.

Wow, that is really different construction; I'm guessing the double concave treadface expands out like a balloon when pressurized to give a flat contact patch - ? I've never seen anything like that. Does that mean they've skipped the usual steel or kevlar belts that reinforce the tread? That would certainly account for lightness.

I was totally waiting for someone to ask the question, LOL. These tires are being manufactured using a new Advanced Bias Ply Technology method of construction. Before everyone goes old tech, they have been competing against the latest Pirelli radial slicks in Argentina and Brazil and other countries in South America and have done very well. Most people on this site grew up with radial tires and don't know the difference in handling and construction characteristics between the 2 types of tires. In a nutshell, the radial gives better rolling resistance, wear and maybe peak grip levels at a cost of weight, vague steering response and for more knife edge limits to the adhesion. The Advanced Bias Ply is a lighter tire with better steering response and an easier to reach and sense edge of adhesion and the break away is gradual.

For the average to better than average driver, you will more than likely go faster on Advanced Bias Ply Tires. As well, they work better for a dual duty car as you don't need or want crazy caster or camber settings with the tires. They have better driver feedback and feel, so most people will go faster. They also don't require a steel or Kevlar belt to maintain a flat tread surface like radials, so they can save weight without it. These tires do have Kevlar diagonal biased belts and extremely stiff sidewalls, so the response will be fantastic.

I can't wait to test them out.

Cool, and interesting. I only drove on bias ply once, but it was seriously old rubber - hard and shiny with age - and it was awful. But that was 1973 vintage tire tech, badly aged out, and since it OEM on a Ford Maverick, probably not a top-drawer tire even when new. I look forward to hearing of your results.
