Thumbs up new pics of the 16X

.. to be uploaded shortly, just received then from my rotary aviation listserve.

They fooled me and few others, we had assumed a wider rotor, to make the compression chamber more efficient, turns out they went the other way, narrower and larger in over all on circle diameter. making a narrower, longer compression pocket.

yes it's direct injection, #3-4 injectors are located on top of the housings.

ALUMINUM side plates!

Renesis side port exhaust, however taller/larger porting.

6 port design with, proportionally, RE like OS ports.

thats it from just a quick view of the pics.. hope to have them up later on...

I don't think this is a repost, if it is.. oh well.

How do you think it will do for turbocharging?

i'm curious what were the issues, if any because i don't really know much about this, with turbo charging the Renesis? were the issues related to the internal design of the engine? i know 10.0:1 compression isn't exactly ideal for FI but if that was the only issue then i don't see why the 16x would not be a good turbo charged engine. with direct injection i think it would be not too far behind other modern high output engines in terms of fuel consumption and emissions. i think Mazda does have the experience and modern resources to design a turbo package that is much less temperamental than their last offering.

The problem with the RX-8 and turbo'ing them is the factory ignition system.

Guys who have over 50,000kms on them notice lack of power and have found the stock coils are "melting out" because they are located right ontop the engine and probably the plastic they use to make them just doesn't stand up to the heat.

I've installed a few sets of new OEM coils on the 04-05 RX-8 and the owners noticed a power difference and MPG increase right away.

Anyone who has turbo'ed their 8 and didn't know about this fault, were blowing up their engines due to ignition breakup in higher rpm under boost, causing detonation. = apex seals out the exhaust

Also the high compression and the fact that Mazda shortened the Apex seals sure doesn't help the cause either.

The rotors and housings are the exact same width as the 12a's

And 3 oil jets per housing! WTF is Mazda thinking, they are never going to pass e-test's injecting that much oil. Or they'll just plug up cats every 5,000kms

FIXED

They get more work out of it, and sell replacement parts.

But in reality they are likely using 3 injectors that inject smaller amounts, oils have come along way since the 80's less goes a long way. Toyota recommends 8k oil changes now.

Haha true, evertime you come in for an oil change they swap out cats too. Expensive maintenance.

I'm sure they will get the 60k or what ever the emissions warranty is out of the original cats.

If those are the pictures you speak of ... those have been out for about a year now ...

I still think they should hook up NRS, and use their ceramic seals ... now that is something that I really want to see. Or atleast something similar like that.. It would reduce emmisions probably in the sense it wouldn't need as much oil to lubricate. and would free up some ponies.

Do the apex seals really come out the exhaust ports of the Renesis once they break?

Having never seen a popped Renesis, I'd think they would do a few more laps around the rotor housing and eventually make their way out.

Never thought of that! My guess is that this new design such as the rx8's probable totally makes your chances zero of having a reusable housing and rotor when you break an apex seal.

I've seen two motors that were totally rebuildable because the chipped apex seal just blew out the exhaust on the"old" style motors. Almost no visual damage.

Your completely right.

When apex seals go boom, they dont just fall out the side exhaust ports, they like to make sure you need alot of parts to rebuild. I've seen a few apart, not pretty.

Those are for H2. It's a dual-fuel setup like the Hydrogen Renesis they are using in the Rx8 in Japan. They've been leasing them to businesses as fleet vehicles (taxis, etc...) for a while now.

So your regular gasoline goes through the same setup that it does on the Rx8, you can just switch between H2 and gasoline on the fly.

You shouldn't have posted those bLing bLing engine and rotor pics. Now Ian is going to be on a mission to duplicate that look.
