Need some opinions on a possible race w/ a Z06
Hey guys,
Well as the title says, I may be lining up with a Z06 this summer.
I'm looking to have all my parts installed and tune the car sometime in June at which point my friend and I are talking about taking a trip to the track and lining them up.
Now, I'm just going on pure hp numbers here. Seeing as the Z06 is rated at 405hp at the crank, and I'll be tuning my car for about 400 to 450 RWHP, I would guess that it will really come down to a matter of who can get the most power to the ground. I don't think I'll smoke him or anything, but I'm pretty confident that I can beat him.
What do you guys think? Is this just a pipe dream? Oh, and just FYI, the Z06 is bone stock and I'll be running a fairly modified FC with a big (TD07 25G, or maybe T78) single turbo setup.
Thanks for the input guys.

I ran a z06 last year. He had intake and full exhaust. (400+whpISH)
Anyway, we went (twice) and he got me by 3 cars evertime. His car would pull hard in 3rd gear. I had 322whp.
It depends how well you or him can drive. Then it depends on traction, then HP, set up, etc.
Remeber thos things make easy power with just and exhaust, cam or nitrous.

IMO it depends where you want to race him!! cause when i had 240sx with a Skyline R33 engine i was pushing only 315 rwhp at 16 psi , the car was tuned for 235 kmh in 4th gear , 275 in 5th gear in something around 30 seconds ... and on the highway i totally smoked the only Corvette that tryed to raced me and we were 2 in my car ... anyways im not talking on the 1/4 mile, cause i know it would have been in front !!
anyways good luck with this race dude !!
show him that rotary bitch slap v8's !!!

In my limited race experience I have learned one important thing especially in drag racing, TORQUE is king. You have to remember that the corvette also has about 400 ft lbs of torque and he doesnt have to wait for it. I drove a 2004 Z06 at shannonville last year, and WOW! My RX-7 race car weighs 2296 lbs and has 220 rear wheel horsepower. The vette i drove weighed about 3300lbs but it would smoke me in a straight line. My best advise is be sure you dyno your car and you run a big torque number before you take on a 400HP V8 car!

Well, like I said, I'm hoping for b/w 400 - 450rwhp. I'm not sure what kind of torque I'll be pushing, but right now I've got more torque than hp (nothing big, 232rwhp, 245torque) so I'm hoping the torque won't fall off too much.
I like the feed back guys, keep it comming.

Ive run with a few on the streets, funny thing about middle aged men in corvettes, they like to race till they get beat, then they pretend they werent trying..
Yeah they have good torque, and they leave the line hard, sometimes to hard, and they just waste the tires, that gives a turbo car an advantage. THey will own you through first gear with big turbo, and thats a fact of life, everything owns me through first, the rx-7 first gear is to short for a turbo car, thats why alot of the aftermarket gear sets have a taller first gear, it loads the motor down which builds boost sooner and gives you more torque, even though the gear multiplier is less.. I ve had Ford half tons beat me through first... If you have 400 rwhp, you are gonna beat the vette, if you can drive.. At our local track the stock z06s and the like are running mid to high 13 seconds soemtimes 14s depending on the heat, Chris ng was faster than them with 365 rwhp..Altitude isnt kind to NA cars..Hp is Hp no matter how you slice it, all the torque in the world is great, but hp is the rate at how fast all the work is done.

Touque gets you to Horsepower. Horsepower gets you to victory. Like Max said, You can have all the tourque in the world, but it means nothing when the HP hits. Tourque only gets you half way there.
Yes, at 450WHP you should beat him in the 1/4 unless you have very very bad tires and cant drive. HP is HP, does not matter how much torque he has, as long as the race lasts longer then 1st gear, you will come out on top. Id like to see a 7 with your power levels race a z06 on the hwy up to either ones top speed. You should be able to pull 8000 rpm in 5th with that much power

Are you sure that's right? I didn't think the rotary could make more torque than HP because of the displacement?
I have the dyno sheet right here.
231.2 rwhp 252.3 Torque and that is on a stock block with no porting.
I'll try to post the sheet sometime this week, but I'll need to find a scanner first.

Well I definitely believe you, I just didn't know that was possible. In the 3rd gen forum they say that no 3rd gen can make more torque than HP with any turbo. I'm just confused in the whole matter and am interested to know why that would be so it's interesting to see that the S4 and your Dyno sheet too (not sure if you have an S4 too?) can have more torque than HP.
in general, cars with smaller turbos, portin, exhausts, intake, etc will make more torque in regards to horsepower, because they make it at a lower RPM so when you get up in the revs (a requirement for horsepower, nothing makes big hp at low revs because it's impossible) they're starting to run out of breath allready, hence the large(er) torque number and small(er) HP number.
That happens on a stock turbo becuase it produces boost up to around 5.5krpm, then falls on its face, taking the torque curve down with it. Any rotary could do that with the right turbo, but its not a good setup at all because with 252lbft of tq he should have a lot more hp. Basically, with the stock turbo the car pulls 252lbft only for about 2500 rpm, from 3k to 5.5k, while with a bigger turbo its possible to achieve a much broader torque curve that peaks no higher then what the stock turbo peaks at but makes a lot more useable power, a lot more horsepower.

I raced one just yesterday, and he beat me off the line (like max said) and through second gear I stayed with him and the lower part of third he started to pull on me, and the top end of third I stayed with him and into fourth, when I let off (in the city) he was only 1/2 car length ahead of me, and I KNOW there is ALOT more power to be had on my car with some better tuning. So with a TD07-25G (17cm) should be enough to beat him seing as I stayed with him with a shitty tune and a TD07-25A (14cm).

just take a look at WRC cars. 2.0 litre engines (smaller than the 13b), but they generate about 300 hp but have 400 ft lbs at 3500 RPM
this is due to restrictors though and of course they DO have anti-lag systems and can generate postive boost at idle, but meh.
