if u tell them it's stock, and it passes inspection they should have no reason not to insure it, however if anything happened to the car u couldn't claim the cost of mods.

its only got and greddy intake apexi exhaust then a couple guages.
their website asks about mods but doesnt say they refuse you if you have them
so stupid me told the lady that its modified. either way, since its a performance vehicle they gave me a location that i have to go so they can inspect/ appraise it. so they would of found out anyways.
but any mods at all and they drop you.
they have insured me for a month and i have to get it inspected by then or they drop the car.
they cost to much anyways so i was thinking of changing, its just become a priority now.

That's gotta be B.S. I don't think she knows what she is talking about. Gauges shouldn't matter one bit. Nor should intake and exhaust unless all the emissions stuff is gone. Just say you don't know how it compares to stock and a muffler is a muffler why should they care what brand it is as long as it don't leak. A cheap *** exhaust could be considered modified from that point of view cause it's not what the car came with. It's not like you're running NOS or anything like that. They won't be putting it on a dyno or anything and likely the mechanic won't know what the original is supposed to look like. %90 of the mechanics I've taken my car to don't know what to do with a rotary anyway. They will likely look at it and say yep its a RX-7 and it seems fine.

her reason was it increases the horsepower. basically they are really bitchy about any go fast parts.
the gauges dont matter, but the exhaust and intake do....the bastards.

TD Insurance Bites the Big One!
I used to deal with Liberty Mutual then it was bought out by TD insurance a few yrs ago.
Thats when all the fun and bullshit started. When I went to get full coverage for my car (88 A.E.) in the spring,
they told me I would have to get an appraisel at my expense.
Otherwise I could only have liability for the same premium that I paid for full coverage last year.
Most insurance companies are pretty vague as to their definition of Modified.
When my policy comes up for renewal in Dec. I will be doing some shopping around.
Another company told me I would have to get a safety certificate because the car was more than 15 yrs old.
More B.S. and hoops to jump through for the privelage of giving them money.
Unfortunately insurance is a neccessary evil and you have to spend some time to find a company that has reasonable policies and prices. Plus one that doesn't create too many excuses not to insure you.

Good luck

TwilightRotary,

You need to go to an insurance broker.
I have coverage for my vehicle through Pilot. They only deal with brokers so I got one. Been there for the past 4yrs now.
Fully appraised and fully covered. Car is modified within reason.

It's tough to find an insurance company who will cover modified cars. Pilot is one of the few if not the only one.

Good luck.

That's the thing, you can't contact Pilot personally. They only talk with brokers.
I tried calling direct and unless I actually knew someone personally from the company they wouldn't take my call.
Find an insurance broker in your area and let them negotiate the deal.

Just FYI... all older cars PAST 15 years have to have a Safety Certificate IF your changing insurance companies (not renewing).

With the rising rate (as the insurance companies say) of 'phantom' cars and 'importing oversea' cars, its at the insurances discretion to ask for yourcar to be appraised and inspected. The reason for this is they want to make sure the car is not a phantom car, however i think they also check for mods.

I been thru this when i had the 10th AE and was trying to get insurance and seeing what type of coverages i can get. Its hard to get FULL coverage on a old car since they either want a appraisal of somesort to get the full coverage. Getting basic liability is not as hard, just a safety cert and the inspection. Its KEY to understand that the inspection IS NOT a appraisal! They are NOT the same! and not every insurance company will ask for a inspection. An appraisal they will ALWAYS ask for if its a old car (not typically used on their system often) and you want FULL coverage.

I had so many headaches with this... not to mention getting a Emissions cert now that any car 1988 IS NOT EXEMPT, 1987 is, but 1988 and newer will not be exempt even after this year.... stupid laws!

Talk with a broker. They are paid based on how much the sell, so they will be more likely to guide you through it that if you were dealing with the company, itself.

I can't believe no one's mentioned this service:

www.insurancehotline.com

It will compare a shitload of companies, brokers, etc.

Oh, and regarding mods., say you don't know **** about cars and have your mechanic check your oil level and air pressure

The problem is not getting cheap insurance. The problem is getting insurance for a modded car.
Yes, you can go to any insurance company, claim you know nothing about the car, and get cheap insurance.
However, if you ever get into a serious accident, and you've never told the insurance company about the mods to the car, they won't pay you a dime!

Any company who's serious about insuring a modded car will force you to get an appraisal. Based on that, the year of the car and model, they will charge you accordingly.

It's funny how these insurance companies work. Right now it costs me more to insure my Mazda3 than it does the RX-7. It's about $400 more a year for the bloody 3. Reason: Too many people have this car and accident repair bills have been higher than estimated.

This is a huge factor in many insurance company rate formulas. For example - when I switched from my 84 VW Jetta years ago I was paying HUGE for it (when I was 21 something in the neighbourhood of $260/month for PL & PD) and I moved into an N/A RX-7 again it was under $100 per month....even though it was a sporty 2dr car vs. a 50hp diesel econo-box.

The ONLY reason? More people had accidents (that insurance company's made payments for) with Jettas then they did with 7's so the ins. company views the latter as lower risk. Nothing to do with what the car ACTUALLY was in my case with Pilot.

What? This would seem they're not dividing the number of claims by the amount of the same models out there...can't be right, IMHO.

That would make low production exotics have lower insurance. All I can think of is that maybe we as RX-7 drivers are better drivers as a group, but I would be slightly biased.
