Neat Trick for Windows 7 64bit & old Tuning Software

So my new Tuning laptop has Windows 7 64bit on it. This creates a problem as a lot of tuning software doesn't support 64bit or doesn't play well with Windows 7. Luckily there is a really simple fix. All you need to do is install Virtual PC with Windows XP. This is offered by Microsoft for Windows 7 and no piracy is required. Once you got the Windows XP virtual machine running, you just install your software, tell it to pass your USB to serial device to the virtual machine and your set to go. Its fully integrated so your drive is available to be accessed by the virtual machine.

I figured this out a few months ago but didn't test it until yesterday tuning a 20b Perry with a Microtech . And it worked flawlessly without issue, even the VROOM sound worked when you open/closed it lol. Perry's have an orgasm when you give them timing o.O . Just thought I'd share, you don't need old laptops to run old tuning software.

There is another feature in windows 7 that allows you to run a program as if its on an XP system. Its more or less a built in virtual PC style system that comes with windows 7 ultimate as far as I know. Never actually used it but would probably work for these types of programs. It goes further than the regular compatibility modes which just force specific DLL's to roll back to previous versions. With those modes, the program still knows its running on windows 7, and if thats not a recognized OS for the program, it won't run. With this new built in application, the program you want to run will see the OS as windows XP SP3.

Yes, that was the first thing I tried. I believe 64bit is the issue. It really isn't all that difficult. Once the windows xp vm is installed, its fairly easy. You just tell windows xp to start and maximize it and its like you have xp running. If you just want to look at your map or whatever and don't need the usb connection, you can actually start the program in windows 7 without the xp vm being open and it works that way.

oh I see, so its the 64 bit portion of the OS that is causing a problem. Seen that before, not surprised.

Yah the 1.89 and below haltech software won't work. Also, the microtech software won't work. Possibly other software as well.

64bit should theoretically be faster then 32bit. However, when OS's come preinstalled from the factory, they usually come along with a lot of useless junk that slows it down. I always reinstall a new computer with a clean OS with the exception of my Lenovo X220 since some of the pre-installed software actually helps with power savings.
