My rant for the year

We suck as a club!
I say so because I consider our club as a minority. We have over 100 registered members on the "Southern Ontario Roll Call. Why is it we can't get together like other clubs and have a spring meet, a fall meet, cruising etc......
I know we used to have meets in the past and their is the "Bruce Meet", which I myself have not been to for my car has never being able to be on the road long enough (reasons for another rant, which is pointless) but thanks to Jim and Marco, my car got on the road this year and has been the best it's ever been since owning my car.
The one thing that pushed me over the edge today, I live in Watertown and as I was making up my bed I hear the familiar sound of something nice driving by.
As I look out onto the main road, I see an NSX drive by, then another, then another and so and and so on..... I counted over 20 NSX driving by, obviously on a fall cruise.
I said to myself this is amazing and sad at the same time.
Again we have over 100 registered owners and we can't get together as a club.
I think we as a club need to do something about this and start planing things together as a club.

Last year Ken and I (on advice from Jim), along with the guys and girls from Sigma Time Attack, organized the spring meet at an awesome location that allowed for both street and track-only rx7's to meet up. I had a good time, but numbers were low because it was supposed to rain. Cayuga is far enough away that it's easy to organize a cruise down to the event.
Something Jim mentioned is that when you try to change dates a million times to accommodate people, it never works. Best idea is to simply set a date a month or two ahead, and keep it there. If you can come, keep it in your schedule. If you can't, too bad, see ya next time.
Using a track location at an event also works well for people like me who are busy from being at the track on weekends already.
As for cruises, I'm not really one of the people who enjoys cruising at speed limit with a bunch of cars that are begging to go faster. I just get myself into trouble . For one thing, there's a lack of exciting roads that we can have fun on here. So why not just go to a track?

Yeah I know it's too late as people have started to put their cars away for the season.
I would love to plan a spring meet for next year if a few other members would like to help.
I will even through this out there in the hopes of getting us together as a club.
I will get our lunch sponsored if we have our spring meet at a track meet at Cayuga.

"Rotary track day" sounds great!
Cayugas track rental is $4600. + tax. For the full day, weekends. $400 + tax, insurance for up to 40 cars, ambulance if we choose at an additional charge.
Total $5650 taxes on for a full day at the track for us rotor heads. That's $141.25 if we can get 40 members to come to the event.
A sponsored lunch by my restaurant.
LET'S SET A DATE FOR SPRING 2013!!!!

Cheap track day. But you may have to open it to all Mazda's. If it doesn't fall on a sigma time attack I'm there.

I would be SO down for that! I'm pretty new to the rotary scene so I'd like to meet some more people in the club and I'd love to see how my car is on a track!!

Don't think we'd need the whole day. Maybe something like 4 hours with an hour lunch in there somewhere. Or lunch first, then track or vice versa. Would make it cheaper and 4 hours is really more then enough.

However, merging with another track day is probably more interesting. The Sigma one worked well last time, at least it keeps people interested.

The problem with 4 hrs is that the track is rented out on a full day basis Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Sigma can be an option, it would be nice to get the RX7 & RX8 Clubs together and have our own thing though.
How about this option, rent the track for the day, and sublet the track to another club for 1/2 the day. This way it will work out cheaper and we can have four hours.
Or we can rent the track and have a general Mazda meet with the other Mazda clubs.

Nice, I like this idea of a Mazda specific track day. Ken and I envisioned something like the Idler's Games in Japan, where a portion of it is just Porsches, when we set it up with Sigma. If there's too much interest in the track day for a Sigma meet though, we take away from the actual competitors!
I'd probably be down for ~$150 for a full day of lapping, or less if there's more than 40 people.

Just for the record, the club use to do all this.
Back in the day, we had Ottawa cruise, Niagara Cruise, Bruce County Cruise, etc.
We had alot of get togethers and the majority of us have stayed good friends even after they've gotten out of the rotary scene.
Sadly, life always gets in the way. Of the "original" crew, there are only 4 of us now still left with a rotary vehicle. The rest have had to get more "practical" cars due to having getting married, having kids, etc.

It doesn't help we live in a police state now. You break the limit by 50km/h or look like we're "stunt driving", and we lose our vehicles along with all the other penalties that come with it.

Wisdom (old age, maturity), police state, and people selling their rides have taken their toll on the club.

I'd be in! I've not yet had the chance to really get out and meet anyone from the club. I'd love to join in, set the date and I'll be there!

@ NEO, I hear where your coming from, that's why I would like to get things as a club going again.
So far there seems to be interest in a track/ spring meet.
I will start doing some research.
Charles, if you Ken and Marco can get on board lets start planning this event.

If I can throw in my $.02, I agree that TMP is a great place to hold a meet, especially combined with a Time Attack. It allows the track only cars to come out as well. My only selfish personal concern with TMP is that I can drive that track in first and second. I can only sorta use 3rd once a lap. Its also way too tight for my race car in some of the fiddly bits. I also have the same issues with DDT.

I would suggest Shannonville instead. I really like Shannonville Pro Track better as its more open and it has way faster corners. If you decide to run Shannonville Long Track, there are some great corners that really stress the car and driver. The pit areas are far superior to TMP, its more centrally located for Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal people. It has a better snack bar. Way cooler to meet after the day at a restaurant in Belleville for telling all the lies about how fast you are. The drive out on Highway 2 is very nice and you can make a weekend out of it and drive down to Sandbanks to play on the beaches.

The best thing is that for all the tracks, there is a ton of comparable times set by CASC Time Attack and Regional racers as comparisons so that you can see how you really compare. The best thing I like is that there is just one wall to deal with and it is way less obtrusive than the wall coming on to the front straight at TMP.

Just my suggestion if you want to make this a cool meet.

I'm in both clubs and from my experience it would be hard to almost impossible to get 40 7's & 8's to commit to a $140++ day. Most, but not all rotary owners are cheap buggers and think they drive a irreplaceable car, so they don't track'em at all. Love the ideal but it would take some real effect to make it a reality. I personally, a few years back rented Shannonville's Fabi course on a friday night and had a hell of a time getting 18 cars out from the 8 club and 0NE 7 namely JDK(Thanks Jim*) to show and help pay the tab that I was on the line for.

* After being a passenger in Jim's beast, I decided to buy a FD as well!

I still remember the past few years we used to have the Spring meet, and the Fall meet at the Sherway Gardens shopping mall, and there were like 40 to 60 rotary cars showed up or something. Some came from London, Niagara Falls/Hamilton area as well.

JDK used to host them. Then since last year, everyone has no interest or hard to come up with a perfect date/time for the Sherway Gardens meet anymore. And this year there is no Sherway Gardens meet as well.....

Shannonville would be cool, although I've never been on the Long-track layout. And Eric's got a point about the Ottawa and Quebec people.
If we make it a Mazda meet instead of rotary-only, it should allow for more people to simply show up without paying for track-time, if they want to come and hang out only. Gathering 40 rotaries and expecting everyone to pay $150 for the meet would be harder than finding 40 Mazdas to pay for track time.

@RXeckless, seeing your a member of the RX8 club as well can you see if any their is any interest in a Mazda track/meet day in the spring.
Charles, seeing that you go to most track events for photography, when is the earliest track day? If we can figure that out, we can have our track/meet day before all the major track days, this way it won't conflict with anyone's schedules.
Do we have any other members who are members of other Mazda clubs, Mazda 3/6, Miata etc We can see if their is any interest.
