My 2nd Gen Mystery. Fuel for thought.
Well I was bored so I decided to create this thread about the more peculiar problem my 2nd Gen has.
More or less to tease your thoughts because it boggles my mind.
You see, my 2nd is not ordinary. It has a carburetor setup on it. Your basic holley setup. Ignition setup is 1985 Distributor, MSD 6A on Leading, and J-109 ignitor (stock for 85) on trailing. Coils and wires are stock second gen.
The key words here are Ignition Setup
Simply put, I have no spark.
Coil(s) Check out.
Ignitors check out.
Distributor.........distributes.
Coils wont fire.
I have currently wired the setup 7(? dont remember) different ways and the coil fails to respond. Well, heres the thing. It responds, it just doesnt spark.
Okay so lets see if I can explain how its wired.
Leading:
Distributor leading is wired through a MSD 6A (Perfectly functional, checked yesterday on a First Gen). From the MSD 6A using the Magnetic pickups off the distributor, It goes to the second gen leading coil. Voltage checked out alright at all the appropriate power connections.
When Cranking, it 'clicks', but it doesnt fire.
Trailing:
Distributor Trailing is wired through a stock J-109 ignitor. It runs to the Trailing coils which are "Bridged" together to fire simultaniously. It ALSO 'clicks', but does not fire.
Conclusions so far.
I have tried about 7 different styles to integrate it into the 2nd Gen systems, to no avail. When originally hooked up as described initially above, it worked 100%, then quit for no reason once the engine warmed to operating tempurature. What is happening is not adding up in my head. After listening to a drawn out conversation about electricity with Aviator920S the other morning, I decided to ground anything I could to the chassis, including the engine to the chassis.
Result was the same. I simply cannot solve this. I have a few more (very few no less) things else to try and solve this dilema, otherwise my RX-7 will be dubbed "Un-fixable". I've currently had about 3 professional piston mechanics look at it, simply beacuse ignitions are more or less the same. All were friends and beer was the payment. I cut off beer supply when people started to get shocked.
Anyone have any Ideas or would dare to venture under the hood for a look?
