The RX-7 crowd got outshown by the RX-8 boys. What happened there? Regardless, another good event with some good lapping. Laps were definitely slower this year, but still entertaining. Thanks to the organisers. Hope we can set it up again in the fall or how about anything at Shannonville?

From what I understand there was only 2 FC's out for free lapping. Not a great turnout at all.

I don't know if you guys understand the effort Al went through to make this happen. It took a ton of coordination with the race organizers to get them too agree and have some people donate time to coordinating the event at lunch and giving up their lunch in the meantime. I organised the first few and it was like pulling teeth to get the organizers to do this and now it is harder as the race weekend is very very tight on time and they set aside an hour for free lapping behind the pacecar for the RX7 Club. It is the only club they consistently do this for. If it wasn't for the RX8's and Mazda 3's it would have been a joke. A handful of cars out of the 23 that said they were going to come out. Disappointing.

Before I would organize another event, I would want to make sure that those who said they were going to come, actually would. How can we ensure that those people who sign up actually attend, maybe charge some money that would be donated to charity. I don't know. I think that because it is free people place no value to the event.

Regarding the slower lapping pace, I spoke to Al and he said that even at this slower pace more people were straggling along and stringing out too far. I think we need to think about a better way to keep up the pace. Any ideas?????

It was great that so many Mazda's made it out for the event and thanks to those who attended, but I wish more RX7's were there representing the car. I would be willing to organize another lapping event at the fall BEMC event if we could answer my concerns.

Eric

Eric,

I know how you feel. And yes, there were only 2 FC's. But there were 2 FD's and 1 FB.
The rest were RX-8's with 1 Speed6 and 1 Mazda3 sport.

It was a pretty good turnout considering it was Mother's day. I'm pretty sure more people would have made it if it weren't for the special day.

I kept thanking Al for everything because I know exactly what goes into getting an event like this to happen.

Making people pay for the "free" lapping will only scare them away. You know how it goes.
Just look at Al's other thread of a full lapping day with instructors. You've got some people say how it's a "ripoff". They don't know what the day entails, all they see is the price.
This is the type of event that would greatly help anyone who's not familiar with their car or have never been on a real race track. But they don't care about that.

I hope another free lapping day will occur in the fall. And hopefully more RX's will show up.

I can understand - but you've gotta realize that half of the people who say they're going to do X or Y actually end up going through with it.

If it wasn't for the fact that I'm rounding the corner on an issue that's blown 4 engines in my car - I'd have been there.

EDIT: Not to sound pessimistic either - but I don't count on a single one of these people here unless I know them (and they've proven trustworthy) and even at that, stuff still comes up like in my case.

This is a great event that was spawned out of my suggestion for a swap meet years ago. I've attended this and had great fun. Not much you can do when things don't run though.

I am a little disppointed in the turn out of RX7's, however the RX8 club and the others more than made up for it. As far as the pace goes, when I got up to "pace speed" after 2 corners I had no one within 20 car lengths behind me, so we made the decision to go about 120 up the back straight and let everyone group back up, then pick it up from turn 8 to turn 5. Its almost impossible to get the "right" speed when you have experienced people and novices together on the track. The fall BEMC event is already booked with some classic car club, and I dont think any of the other clubs would let us do that. I have already confirmed with BEMC for next spring again if anyone is interested in doing it again.

Solution

I was glad that the 8's showed up at the meet point in such numbers and we came to the event. It didn't make it look bad like (4 guys showed up) or something...

As to the solution to KEEPING PEOPLE showing up and not just be a "last minute no show".. it's simple...

Setup a paypal account. Have people pay into the event i.e. $20. That same person that administers the account will return your money in cash at the event.
The no-show's lose their money. That money can be used for charity, or to buy drinks to people, or given to the track people (i.e. Mosport).

So if everyone shows up, technically the event is free. If you don't prepay, and you show up, then you don't get to go on the track cause you abused the system.

Discipline the mother *******!!! =)

I dont think we need to over complicate things with the money etc. I assumed we would have 25-35% no shows, as that usually happens. Next spring I will open it to all the Mazda clubs by way of invite, instead of them hearing it word of mouth. The idea was to have a mini "Meeting of the Mazda's" for the true performance enthisiasts instead of a picnic style event. Onward and upward, dont worry about what happened in the past, the event will get bigger and better for next year.

Just my 2 c worth - this is my 3rd year coming along for this event - unfortunately sa 22 brakes expired the week before so it was the Alfa for me and VR6 for the lad. It would be good to see more 7's but lets not forget a few years ago the turnout was way lower and #'s have grown each and every year and I am all for inviting a broader range of Mazda enthusiasts and their cars.

As for fun/speed factor, unless you arrange faster guys up front and slower at the back you will never get to a full pace type event (and even then not for long as you catch the end of the train)

In terms of fun, what better way to spend a few hours at Mosport, soak up the atmosphere of a great canadian club racing, chat with the teams there, look at the cars and then get to drive around a truly awesome track.

The added benefit is my son now want to do solo sprint (if that is a benefit....)

So great work Al - maybee next year ask guys to self grade and inexperienced folks run further back in the pack - good luck with your season

Al, forgot to mention, thanks for the sweet hat.

As for the pace, in our little pack, there was 1 car basically holding up a train of 6 or 7 cars. I don't think this is avoidable though as there will always be new comers that take a little slower, which is good cause we don't want any incidents. So I think you handled it the best given the varying speeds/experience of the drivers.

I guess you could do a beginner then an experienced session, but we don't seem to have the numbers to support it and that would mean a lot less time on the track.

As for the Mother's day thing, I think the event has been held on Mother's day each year hasn't it. Regardless, it looks like the event is going from an RX-7 event to a Mazda event which I think is great cause it gets more people out, and that's really what we're trying to do.

Thanks for all your support everyone. The reason we have this date every year is thats when the club that hosts us hosts their CASC race. I actually tried to get the Motm guys to have it at Mosport just like we do our little event but it got shot down. Next year I will open it up to all the clubs by way of invites and it should get even bigger and better!
