Question Midas quotes for work on an 88 FC

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone can do this for cheaper?
My RX7 is currently at their shop needing some work. I am not mechanically gifted so I had to take it in as my brakes were extremely soft.

While I was at it, I got them to got them to check my spark plugs as well.

New Master Brake Cylinder & installation - $407
Brake fluid flush - $99

Spark plugs ($21 a piece) - $88 (not sure where the extra $4 came from...)
Fuel system flush - $170

They wanted about $400 to get my A/C system retrofitted and recharged.... no thanks.

Total, they want to rape me of $877 or so including taxes and shop fees, etc.

RX7 Specialties said they were extremely busy and would not even be able to look at my car for 3 weeks or so.

Does anyone know anywhere else I can try that would definitely be for cheaper in Calgary, AB? Or if anyone in locally would be able to do this?

Let me know. A reply ASAP would be great as my car is currently hoisted up in their shop still.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info! I will check Economy Auto out.

The reason why I went to Midas is because it is only 3 blocks away from my house in the SE.
As it is now with my brakes, my car is barely road worthy... I have to pump my brakes in order to stop at low speeds. I can't imagine it would be safe on Deerfoot or Crowchild.

OK.... now I'm pissed.
I went to take my car back because I would obviously get a better price elsewhere.

They charged me $78 worth of inspection fees.
On the way home, my car didn't feel right at all.
Smoke was coming out of the exhaust and it was making a lot of loud popping noises.
There was no power. I pull up to my drive way and gave them a call and told them about it.

They told me to bring it back. They think it's the spark plugs not being put in all the way.

But now my car won't leave the driveway.
As soon as I pop it into 1st and put the clutch down, the car stalls and turns off.

I called back and the guy told me to call back again in 10 min as he was going to talk to the mechanic...

What a day.

Edit:
Ok, I spoke with them again.
The mechanic claimed that the car was in bad shape when he got it. BS!

He is saying that it's the spark plugs and they should be replaced.

Any suggestions?

you may want to double check that they put the sparkplug wires back into the correct positions..

Thanks Chris, that is the problem.

The leading lower plug boots are black and upper trailing plug boots are blue. I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be the other way around.

Problem fixed.

Went out and bought the 4 plugs and installed them properly.
Car sounds and idles better than before now.

I do NOT recommend Midas at all for anything.

I like how they blame you for their mistakes. Its like they figure you dont know your own car.

Calgary member..

There's a member on this board from Calgary. His userid is "Aviator" something. Far as I know he's an aircraft mechanic (AME). From anything I've ever seen him post, he's very mechanically knowledgeable. If the David person recommended above, is too far away, maybe this guy can help you out. You could try looking up his exact userid and PMing him....

kramer mazda for a/c = 200$ or less, they still have a machine for the old a/c juice, so they dont have to retro it.

Thanks for the info!

David is going to get back to me with a quote on Monday. I'll take a look at A/C from Kramer.

While I'm at it, I'll get them to do a compression test out of curiousity. Does anyone know how much these tests cost?

Thanks again!

Hey, thanks for the offer, but I think I'll pass on the plugs.

On another note I just got off the phone with the manager of the Midas shop.
When I went to pick up my car on Sat, I noticed that my stereo was changed from CD to tape. I never listen to cassettes in my car.. only CDs.
I found a Tupac tape in my tape deck.

I hadn't written about it on Sat because I wanted to talk to the manager who was supposed to be in today. I didn't install an expensive sound system for auto repair workers to listen to while they screw up my car.

Anyways, I spoke with the manager and told him about the spark plug screw up and the tape I found. He took my number and was going to check into it. He called back and pretty much said that he couldn't give an explanation as to why I found that tape in my deck.

He claimed that everyone there listened to country music and that the mechanic that worked on my car didn't even know who Tupac was. He said that maybe my friend(s) were playing a prank on me.

What a load of crap.
