Looking for: Cheap insurance!
Looking for: Cheap insurance!
Sup y'all
Just got myself a gem 88 convertable with S5 TII motor from the autotrader. The guy selling it is a RX-7 forum member as well!
Anyways back to the main point, I just got a quote on the insurance on this thing and because of my poor driving record (speeding tickets etc etc) I can't afford the insurance. Also, my insurance company rates the convertable a higher trim than a Turbo II!! Is this true?
I'm currently with state farm insurance and I was wondering if anyone knows of an insurance place that gives out reasonable insurance prices for ppl with poor records. It would really suck if I can't even enjoy the car.

Hey man,
Most likely if you move from your current company you will get charged more. So if you can stay with a company that has insured you in the past you will get a better rate.
My insurance in about $1300 per year with 2 minor speeding tickets and loss of three points on my 85 SE, with RBC. A T2 will definantly be more, and yes convertibles are more expensive due to accident rates, repair costs and injury.
Try RBC or Primum. They have given me good quotes in the past.
Always check insurance rates before you buy!

Most companies will forgive one ticket.. but after that your meat on a stick. Combine that with a 2 door , vert, turbo, sports car and your rigging alarms all over the place. I'm surprized that state farm is even thinking of insuring you, they are usually one of the most conservative and least forgiving companies out there.
Sell or store your rx7 ( with basic fire/theft ins.) get an escort or corolla, drive it around for a few years to get the tickets out of the way, then try again. That's what allot of people have had to do in the past to make it anywhere affordable to drive thier sports car with a poor record.

I'm going through this right now as I just bought a new car. Seeing how I wanted to see what was out there so the best I came up with Is
CAA, and believe me I called around.
It still doesn't beat Traders General (Insurance that I belong to right now). Although they are a private company you may have luck In getting a quote from them. 1 800 263-4230

I called these guys to get a quote for my '84 GSL-SE but they weren't able to give me a quote over the phone, probably due to the cars age. They said they were going to send some forms in the mail but I never recieved them. It could be bad customer service, or perhaps they don't like me.

If you give the ame info to every company and can't find cheap rates, ther are a few "Risk Factors" that effect what you pay.
Insurance is cheaper when:
a) You are over 30.
b) You get married.
c) You don't live downtown or in a high crime area.
d) You park in a private secure garage or driveway.
e) You drive less than 15 kms each day.
f) You get a high deductable.
If any of these apply to you, then let the insurance companies know, it will lower your rates.

You guys should see what it would have cost me if I had bought that Rx-8 last year. It was 4 times a month what the car payment was, and my record, as of last month, is CLEAN.
Liability is $1800 a year out here for any car. Thats the basic of the coverages. Its supposed to go down 5% a year, provided you have a clean year. But with all the extra fees and such they tack on yearly, It goes up. Its the only way they can 'Get their money back'.
$1800 x 2 million (we'll pick a round number) = $3,600,000,000 (3.6 Billion).
Chirst, they make more than the government. AND thats only liability on 2 Million folks. And with all the $100,000 + cars around here, they must be around the 4.5 Billion mark a year.
Anyways, you have an 88 Convertable. Not an S5 TII. As far as they know, its an 88 N/A, convertable.

cosmic, I thought you were an engineer. If you are registered with the PEO (full time member or engineerin in training (EIT)). Call TD Meloux Monnex, or The Personal. Give them your PEO number and they will get you 60%.
My insurance went down 60% after I switched from Dominion of Canada and went with the personal with my engineer's group rate. 2200 for an 03 legacy GT, and a 89 rx7. Full coverage on the subaru only. Liabilty for both cars at 2 million.
I was at 3200 after moving from Kingston back to mississuaga on the rx7, no chnage in history or policy, just address. Then it went to 5000+ when I bought my new car. Now i'm at 2200.
