Lapping in other machine shop services in GTA?
Lapping and other machine shop services in GTA?
I am considering doing a self-rebuild on the engine in my 1991 Coupe. Does anybody know of a shop in the GTA (I'm in Brampton) that has experience lapping side housings?

John,
By all means, check with Mazdees. But FWIW, lapping is not essential to a rebuild - measure your side housings for wear, and if they're in spec, re-use.
I rebuilt my motor last year. A great experience I would highly recommend - very rewarding! Can't tell you the mixture of fear and elation you feel when you first fire it up and it brap-braps to life belching clouds of smoke...............
PS let me know if you decide to proceed - I bought micrometers, dial guages, an engine hoist, engine stand, etc. I no longer need, if you're in the market. I can give you a few insights into tips & techniques too.

Even without measurable wear, I'd probably want to lap the side housings just for the heck of it. But it's likely necesssary as the engine has 205,000KM on it and it blew an apex seal on the rear rotor. I expect to see at least some scarring, but you never know.
I've got a guy in Brampton who will do a rebuild for $2200 which is just a great deal, but that whole "rewarding experience" thing is sucking me in. I'm just not sure I have the time to invest and I don't want the swap to take forever. How many hours would you guess that it took you?
