just got an 81
Hello all!
I just picked up a 1981 S this weekend. Its rust free, runs good, with a decent interior. I need to do plugs and wires, maybe brakes and its good to go. I'll probably pick up a set of stock alloy wheels (hopefully cheaply) to replace the steel rims. Someone was telling me the steel rims are somewhat and desirable. Is that true? Anyway I'm only the 2nd owner - the first owner has everything documented down to every tank gas he bought!

To be sure it is rust free, remove the rear storage bins and check to make sure there is no rust on the wheel wells back there. Usually you cannot see it from outsdie, and if you could you'd have to remove the rear tires first.
Very nice car though, just check what I said above just be sure as catching the cancer early will be very helpful in curing it before it spreads to badly. I know from personally experience how crappy it is to repair rust damage back there.
I'll post some pics to show you what I'm talking about.
EDIT:

I have some more pics of my repair if you want to see them...

As for your stellies - I have them as well, and I like them just because they are something not everyone has.
You just need to clean your up and add some beauty rims .

That's a good find. (and with all service records yet). Not sure what the going rate for a base model will be ten years from now but you gotta know it's going to go up. The steel rims with beauty rings actually do look better than the stock mags, as does just about everything else available.
Best to keeo it as original as possible, but there are some completely reversible mods that will improve performance. Cheif among these is an aftermarket exhaust system. Just don't throw away the original components.

Yup, those are the stock steel rims. However, when my dad bought the car back in '98 it didn't have any rings, so my dad bought those at Tiger Automotive (a local place in Saskatoon I beleive) for real cheap just incase someone decides to steal them...7 years later and they still look good and haven't been stolen yet lol.

Thanks guys!
The wheels aren't actually dirty - they have been painted body colour at some point. Looks pretty decent imo. I just really like the stock alloy wheels for some reason.
