JDM FD3S Coming!

Hello all... Just wanted to make a quick intro.... My name is Mitch, my current passion is Skylines... But I've always loved the FD3's... finally I can own/afford one... got a red 1991 FD3S Type R coming from Japan. I've joined this site to learn more about the RX7 scene.

Thanks!

Here's a pic of my current ride... It's undergoing some serious work for ImportFest...

RX7....

Here's a pic of the RX7 Type R Twin Turbo!...

It's a shame the RHD cars need the identification mark on the back of it... mucks up the look of the car.

In ontario at least.

What mark is this? There's no such thing in BC that I'm aware of / have seen on any of the RHD cars I see.

Not sure what you mean but our RHD cars don't have any markings in Ontario!

I think i would put something on the back, if i did have a RHD car. Just so that people behind me in the left hand turning lane, don't think i'm an absolute retard.

DUDE THAT FD LOOKS SICK! OK we all know why ppl will be importing FD's from japan starting in November, and that's because the North American resale is ridiculously overpriced (Plus nothing beats PURE JDM) so I think everyone wants to know. How much did u pay for that beauty?

P.S I see you live in Toronto. If you ever need and extra set of hands to work on the car let me know.lol

Thanks guys! That's the main reason I never could get an FD3... it cost way too much money here... In Japan; they're a little more affordable...

RHD stickers are only required on vehicles if you don't have visible turn signals...
The issue has been talked about lots on Skyline boards... Although some ignorant popos may still use it as an excuse to pull you over... (it happens)

Driving a RHD vehicle is way easier than you think....

I'll be at Importfest with my Skyline... If you're in town, drop by... I'd love to chat...
Skylines are nice... but FD3's look way better!

I'm curious what importer/company did you get your skyline and plan to get your fd with? i have been shopping around for importers but most of them jack the sale prices once they hit canadian soil and label them JDM. im assuming this cimpany does not since you say its more affordable than here. if you dont mind sharing im curious how much you did pay and how much fees were etc. thanks.

I was charged this past summer for not having a RHD sticker in the rear window of my JDM FC....I'm in the process of going through the court to get it dropped. It says right in the Highway Traffic Act:
Every vehicle that is equipped with a right hand drive shall, unless it is equipped with a mechanical or electrical signal device as described in subsection 142 (6), have prominently displayed on the rear thereof, in bold face letters of not less than 50 millimeters in height and of a colour which is in contrast to that of the vehicle, the words, "RIGHT HAND DRIVE VEHICLE".

To be honest, I've seen so many RHD vehicles here in GTA Toronto area, like: Skyline, AE86, and FC, and I have never seen one that has any "RHD identification mark" at the rear because i always notice that their axx are kept so clean. Haven't they got caught by the cop at all?

yeah I think that the law as joe pointed out permits it fine, so if you get that ticket you're OK. When you go to court you will win because they'll quote the law and be like "oh". and drop the charges.

well that's what would happen if all went well anyways.

JDM fd's seem to be a bit cheaper but not significantly so!

Also, i'm currently in the process of trading my FD for a GTR, hahaha...

The law says that if you have a signaling device you dont need a RHD sticker. Speaking of the law, customs has denyed a legal RX-7. The guy spent $10 000 in lawyer fees fighting with transport canada and they still wont give him the car.

Check out the horrer stories on the GTR forum and good luck with your importing, because you'll need it.

In hopes of easing fears.... the RX7 incident was unusual and was a culmination of many bad things happening at one time for this batch of cars.

We've imported many cars without incident, and well versed in the import laws and procedures of Canada.

My RX7 will be here in January safe and sound!

Ok, I'm sure this is gonna make me sound like an idiot, but these signalling devices everyone is talking about, this is just turn signals, right? I'm assuming thats it, but if thats the case I don't see how that is relevant to a car being right hand drive or not.

Section 63 of the highway traffic act.

My bad though, I think they comply with Section 142 (6), as long as all signals are illuminible 30 minutes before sunset and 30 minutes after sunrise. Don't know too much about 15 year old cars from Japan though except that the '91 RX7 is beautiful. I'm sure they do since that section was written in 1990.

I just read section 63 the other day after thinking about RHD and happened to see this thread shortly after.

It was an FC, over 15 years old. They also refused 2 legal skylines with no rference to the law.

Requirements for signalling device

(6) A mechanical or electrical signal device shall clearly indicate the intention to turn, shall be visible and understandable during day-time and night-time from the front and from the rear of the vehicle for a distance of 30 metres, and shall be self-illuminated when used at any time from one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 142 (6).

Essentially, the bit about requiring lettering indicating RHD is ancient code - a holdover from pre-WWII days when cars often had a no rear light or a single brake/marker light at the rear, and hand signals, which a following driver might not see on the right, were the means of indicating turns and stops. So any car with lighted turn signal lamps doesn't need signage on the rear. If a cop wrote a ticket on the requirement for RHD lettering he was either, or both, counting on the person to pay the ticket rather than challenge it, and/or ignorant of the law himself, and just found the bit about RHD markings without reading the related section on signals, and thought he'd found something great to hassle a sports car driver with. Just like a lot of window tinting tickets.
