importing a rolling chassis to canada?

Does any one know the full process for doing this ... I want to get a rolling chassis from a member here from the forum. What kind of forms do I need and such?

If you want to put it on the road, it will be no different than importing any other car. You will need a letter from the manufacturer stating that it complies with any and all recalls, and you will need to give the border a heads up.

That should be it.

Then you should be fine, just make sure the car still has a title, otherwise you could be bunged.

Over 15 years means you'll only really have to deal with your oop inspeciton, and none of the RIV shinanigans.

What if the chassis is just that.... a body with abso-frikkin-lutely nothing on it. No paint, no glass, no interior, nothing in the engine bay... Just a body with wheels?

Can you bring it into the country, register that you have it, then build it back up and put it on the road?

I seem to remember there being some kind of time limit by which you had to have the vehicle inspected if you imported it..... Which would suck if you had to build a car from scratch, only to have them tell you that if you don't build it in a month you've gotta have it impounded or something.

The 45 day time limit is an RIV thing, and applies to the under 15 year, US import.

I can't think of anything stopping you from getting a chassis older than 15 years old, provided it's got a Vin on it somewhere and a title, and taking as long as you want to register it.

You probably still have to export it from the US in the same manner, but i belive there is not RIV form 2 for a car older than 15 years.

Funny you should ask because I just emailed the RIV regarding this. Here is my email and the reply:

Dear Dom

All vehicles (except buses) that are over 15 years or older by the date
of manufacture are exempt from the Registrar of Imported Vehicles
program. You must be able to prove the age of the vehicle to a Customs
officer.

You will be issued a Form 1 - Vehicle Import Form at CBSA (Canada Border
Service Agency) and they will double stamp your Form 1 showing the
vehicle is exempt from our program.

Please contact CBSA for more information on importing your vehicle.
Their telephone number is 1-800-461-9999 (within Canada) or 204-983-3500
(outside of Canada).

Sincerely,

Christina Lima

Subject: Importing a project car' from US to Canada

Is there a way to import an 1985 Mazda Rx-7 into Canada from the US as a

'project car'.

No engine
No transmission
No brakes
No seats
No dashboard

Just a shell

Which I could then take a few years to complete?

See I've called them up and read most of the info on the net and this is what i've came up with:

If the car is a rolling chassis, it can only be entered as a parts car.

Parts cars cannot be licensed within Canada though. (So you can't use the shell with that vin anywhere in canada to use on everyday roads)

I have been told a few things that i could try doing.

1) Acquiring a salvage title: This is not guaranteed that you can do that but you will have to check with the US guys what is needed to get a salvage title for the car. I'm saying this because salvage car on the other hand can be licensed in Canada provided that it goes through all the Canadian Regulations and safety

2) Make the car driveable, and drive it up here (this option seems to be the easiest to cross it thru the border as far as regulations and safety and stuff ... but then again where are you going to make that car drive able??)

3) Pretty much what we call Illegal but may seem to be the least hassle free ... import the car as a parts car, do what ever you want with it (as far as painting), grind down the number on the firewall, switch the plates that are held by the 2 screws in the firewall, switch the plates that are on the dash, take out the sticker by the door jam and then just say it still the same car as you had before but you've done extensive restoration on the car.) How safe this option is I'm not sure, i've been told there isn't much problems if you're keeping the car but when you resell the car is when all the hassle and worries starts piling up.

When i brought the Speedmachine FC over the boarder all i did was walk into the customs office with all my parer work(ie: Title, Bill of sale) They charged me the tax on it and sent me out to the customs officer with a yellow peice of paper. He looked at it, asked me some questions(ie: were did i find out about the car/ and make sure you don't try to lie about how much you payed because they really try to find out if your lieing) then sent me on my way!!! Didn't ask to see the car or anything!!!!! Then when i got back home i went into the minestry, showed them the papers, they transfered the car into my name as "unfit"(which just means not saftied or e-tested) then sent me on my way again..... Very easy process. All i have to do when i want to put it on the road is show up with a safty and e-test to get my plates.(could be next month, could be in 5 years it doesn't matter because the car is already in my name) And oh ya they don't charge the tax when you transfer the car because you already payed it at the boarder.

If you need any other info PM me!!
