Importing car from the states?
How hard would this be? Do I have to follow the 15 year rule? I think not because I know people have imported more recent models. Are there any fees? and how difficult is it? How long would it take, basic questions etc etc.
thanks,
Carthik

I brought mine up from Boston 2 1/2 years ago. The border guards required the title of the car in their possession for 72hrs. I had to pay all GST at the border along with an additional 6.1% because the cars are made originally in Japan, that caught me off guard. Before it can be safetied it has to have the daytime running lights working, a local speed shop can usually do it. Also when you register your car you will have to pay your PST, mine was 8%. All in all, you will have to spend an additional 20+% even before you can drive it legally. Hope this helps. If it's worth it, I wouldn't change a thing, I love having my FD in my garage.

car is an scca spec neon (dodge), I'm assuming there wont be an additioanl fee. Can I fake the value of the sale, afterall it is a race-car and hard to get a KBB value on that, would that be difficult? You say they held the title for 72 hours, so they just take the title and let you drive off? And can someone clear up the daytime running headlights thing for me.
Thanks,
Carthik

If you import the car from the US before it falls under the 15 year rule, you must go thru the Registrar of Imported vehicles - www.riv.ca. If the car is on their list of admissible vehicles, no problem, other than that DRL's are required. Neons are on the list as admissible. Many cars are admissible, but with restrictions, such as requiring stronger bumper reinforcements, for example (the case with FD's). If the car is a race or parts car, and being imported for that purpose, it need comply with nothing, but can never be registered for on-road use in Canada.
You will likely be asked for the purchase documents for tax purposes - you could always dummy up a set, but that of course would be tax fraud - use at your own risk! How much can a used Neon be worth anyway? Certainly, if you tell them it was a $500 car and it's obviously worth more than that, you may buy yourself some more intense scrutiny.
You can have the paper work at the point of entry at least 72 hours in advance to avoid being held at the border.
