Hi everyone!!

I'm pretty excited because I just bought a very important car for me.
I've had a few cars in my day.....a '91 NSX, an '03 Vette, a 72 Datsun 240Z (totally restored and sweet!), a '64 Vette Roadster. Holy shit I'm making myself sound old.

Anyway, I just bought a '94 Touring Edition with only 31,500kms.! Totally stock with even it's original rubber! That must mean that it hasn't been totally abused in it's first 11 years of life. It's even a Western Canadian car, initially sold out of Kelowna. It has the optional chrome BBS wheels.

I'm going to try to make it to the May 14th meet at North Glenmore park but I'm not gonna stay after dark. ;)

My next step is to get some Reliabilty Mods. done on it. Where do you peeps think is the best place to go here in Calgary. I also have to get new rubber before I take it to the track.

Here's some pics.

Cheers,
Bob

There's a few of us who are over 40, and at least one who's closer to 50 than he is to 40. :D

The person to talk to about 3rd gen reliability would be Ed. He has a very nice and well-maintained red '93 (or '94?) and is an engineer by trade.

Now I have a question for you:

You've owned an NSX, which by anybody's standards is one very fine ride. But which of the two (NSX vs. RX7) is the most fun to drive?

shifty703 05-06-05 07:58 PM

Well I'm 30 and I've got an 88 GXL, but my old man has a nice silver 86 GXL and he's 51...

enamel_doc 05-06-05 08:18 PM

Nice to know that there are others my age that still appreciate and enjoy cars such as these.

Aviator, there is absolutely no question that the RX-7 is a more fun to drive than an NSX. That's because the NSX is easier to drive fast, way less demanding, way more forgiving. I, however, enjoy driving a car that is a little rough around the edges....more like a go-cart in handling. I think that the 3rd gen. RX-7 is truly the ultimate sports-car. The NSX red-lined so high (as all V-tech engines do) that I was always afraid I would blow the thing up trying to get some torque out of it. The '03 Corvette is the polar opposite, with tons of torque. A corvette is probably the only car I would consider buying with an automatic transmission.

91-94 NSX's are going for between $45K and $60. Perfect '94 RX-7s (like I bought) are going for $30K to $35K. To me it's an absolute NO-BRAINER; buy the RX-7 and use the rest of the money for a winter car.

Of course, that being said, I'll have to watch how much I spend on mods. I imagine it's pretty easy to go crazy and bust the bank on those things.

Cheers,
Bob

gkarmadi 05-06-05 09:25 PM

sweet car...
sup it up...and then go for nsx hunting..

nubian 05-07-05 03:23 PM

is that the one that was for sale in canmore? very nice. that interior is creepy clean

come to the rx7 meet with it. make edv jealous :)

enamel_doc 05-07-05 05:21 PM

Yep..that the Canmore car.

The inside is like brand new.

sub-zero 05-07-05 06:40 PM

Very nice car. Your car with a few mods will blow away the NSX. There are very many helpfull People here and a ton of info for mods and reliability. Best of luck.

Steve

Hey Bob
got any pictures of that Datsun?, i've also liked the style, and you never see them on the road anymore.

Sweet car ! Will be nice to see some more FDs come to the meet this month!

salamander 05-08-05 07:10 AM

Are you saying the BBS wheels were Mazda issued for the 1994 RX-7? I have heard of BBS wheels for certain RHD only cars, but never for any LHD ones.

Here's a copy of the price list and options that was in the window of the car when it initially sold in Kelowna.

I'm going to try to keep this car as stock as possible with only reliabiltiy mods. to be done.

You can see on the sheet that the wheels were optional.

Just wondering how much you got for it. Over the last few years pristine original examples have been known to fetch 15K, at that photo can't be over 2 years old (evidenced by the 350Z in the background).

enamel_doc 05-08-05 10:05 AM

I sold it for $14,000.00 to one of the Sales Managers of Erickson Nissan in Edmonton in 2003.

Here's a picture of the wheel

ShaunO 05-08-05 12:15 PM

Y'know, I think I know this car. Do you know if the original owner was actually the owner of the dealership in Kelowna?

enamel_doc 05-08-05 01:25 PM

Yes he was and this is the car.

I think he then sold it to a fellow in Red Deer? Then he sold it to a guy in
Canmore who I got it from.

salamander 05-08-05 04:31 PM

BBS makes great wheels.

I guess it's none of my business, but did you get a decent price? Way back when, the owner of the dealership was asking a price that made me believe he really didn't want to sell the car.

I'd really like to have a look at the car. Are you coming to the meet at Glenmore next weekend?

That price doesn't surprise me at all. And in another 5 to 10 years I expect to see mint 1st gen RX7s (especially 1979, Limited Edition and SE models) to fetch at least that much since by then there will be way fewer of them. Your 3rd gen will likely never be worth less than it is right now and should enjoy an equivalent spike in value over the same time frame. Here's hoping.

Um...lets just say I got a fair price considering its condition. The guy in Canmore was asking 35K and I got it for less than that. It came with a set of winter tires and mag rims, both unused.

I'm hoping to get to the meet at Glenmore park.

SAiamNE 05-08-05 09:13 PM

Nice Doc... Very nice! ;)

edv 05-09-05 07:41 PM

Hey, nice find, Doc!
My odometer just went over 100,000 this weekend, but I was hammering thru the twisties at the time, so it's all good. Suspension is still tight, although the clutch and brakes are getting sloppy.

Hey, are you gonna get a license plate that says 'CME4DK' ?? lol

As far as being the oldest 7 owner, I was born during the International Geophysical Year....you older than that? Please be older. Please. Then Brett will have someone new to pick on. I think he fears Father Time more than the rest of us.

How about '2TH DOC'?
I dunno when the IG year was but I was born in 1960.
.....and no, this is not a mid-life crisis car for me. I don't think.....

SophiaCDN 05-09-05 09:59 PM

Pour edv, still the oldest ;)

PaulFitzwarryne 05-09-05 11:37 PM

You must all be youngsters in Calgary. I was born before the Spanish Civil War and taught to drive in my father's daily driver- a Bugatti type 44.

Dropped in on the Canadian Forum to see what odds and ends I can pick-up while visiting my son this year who is at McGill Uni. Last time I came over, drove extensively round Quebec Province for a month but did not see one RX-7.

Have owned numerous sports cars but my present RX-7, a 85 12A turbo efi, is the most enyoyable to drive and great classic lines.

LOL... that used to be an issue. But in this day and age it's trivial, what with modern medicine, viagra, plastic surgery, viagra, hearing aids, viagra, a wife 13 years younger, viagra, the mentality of a 20-yr-old, viagra, a new career, viagra, a pilots' licence and more viagra.

I figure that the next big step after reaching maturity is senility. Therefore, if I never act my age I automatically stave off senility, Depends, bedpans, wheel chairs and geezer expressions like "tarnation" and "by gum."

No worries here, nope. Besides, I was only born in 1962. It's not like I'm a 1959 model or anything. :bigthumb:

SophiaCDN 05-10-05 12:14 AM

Didn't realize we had so many fogies on here ;)

Although it brings balance and prevents the teenage punks from taking over :bigthumb:

edv 05-10-05 07:27 AM

Good God.
Am I the only person on this board who remembers where he was when JFK got shot?

Actually, I met a (much) older gentleman 2 years ago from Calgary who claims to have a red FD. Dunno if he knows what the Internet is or not though. Hope so. If he makes the meet, then I'm off the schnide.

enamel_doc 05-10-05 10:52 AM

Whoa.....burn!!!

Good one Sophia

ChristopherL 05-10-05 11:04 AM

I'm a '59 model myself and actually have never seen an older RX-7 driver than me...oh well.

enamel_doc 05-10-05 11:37 AM

Personally, I think chicks 'dig' us middle aged guys.

Just as long as I don't start smelling old and I'm still limber enough to
get in and out of my car without breaking a hip.

I hope you're not thinking of girls in their 20s ;) :D

If you are thinking chicks in their 20s.... No offense to my middle aged friends here, but thinking that girls in their 20s dig you is a common misperception among many of you. I think I'll share a story just so you save yourselves (or some friends) some embarrassing incidents... ;)

Just this past weekend I had a 44 year old guy try to kiss me... Once again, no offense, but most girls my age are in NO way attracted to guys in their 40s (with the exception of Tom Cruise, of course)! We like young, fit, fresher meat ;) So, what happened after my middle aged incident? Well, I got a good story out of it to tell my mid to late 20 girlfriends ... We all went "Ew? What on earth was he thinking?" and laughed...

Once again, no offense intended... But many middle aged guys need a reality check! Ego seems to grow with age...

enamel_doc 05-10-05 01:15 PM

Ewwwwwwww...

No way. I know better than that.
Actually, 60+ women are the age group that find me attractive.

PS. You would have kissed him....if you were really, really drunk.
(I mean comatose-drunk)

Yes thats awesome Doc. Thats always something to brag about.. ;) HAHA

Aviator 902S 05-10-05 07:17 PM

Sophia's right. Younger girls are more attracted to young studs born in the same decade as them. (although they seem to make exceptions for older guys who can play guitar).

"But what about guys like Donald Trump, Jack Nicholson and Billy Joel?", you ask. Simple--- it's not these guys' bodies that the chicks are attracted by. Ever heard of the term "Trophy wife"? How about "Sugar Daddy"? :bigthumb:

I think that with the right combination of ....

1. Sense of humour
2. Booze
3. Ambience or Atmosphere
4. Money
5. Booze

....that guys in their late 30's or early 40's still have a chance with the 20 somethings.

ChristopherL 05-10-05 08:37 PM

Of course you guys are assuming that ALL 40-plus year old guys actually are attracted to 20 something women!

No offense, but that is far from the truth. From intellect, to emotional intelligence to value-sets, I find nothing attractive in women of this age. Many - not all - are complete air heads and while they no doubt don't have the time for me, they shouldn't flatter themselves thinking that guys my age are somehow constantly drooling over them. Utter crap.

Aviator 902S 05-10-05 08:41 PM

I was in my early 40s and married to a 20-something. But she turned 30 last month. (still looks and acts 20-something though).

enamel_doc 05-10-05 08:49 PM

The reason old guys are attracted to 20 year olds is because 'youth' in general, is beautiful.

That's why puppies are way cuter than dogs.

SophiaCDN 05-10-05 09:16 PM

So how come men in their 40s constantly turn their heads and drool when a 20 year old pair of legs walks by ;)

Don't worry Chris, I can handle your rejection... I'll only secretly with a voodoo doll put an ED hex on you ;)

edv 05-10-05 10:15 PM

I hate that whole ED thing. They could've called it something else...

As far as 20-somethings vs 40-somethings..I had an encounter with a 20-something woman in a bar recently. She came up to me out of the blue and pressed herslf firmly against me and purred with the most provocative proposition you can imagine.
Now, had I been in my 20s, I'd be on the bus to woodyvillle. As a 40-something, my first reaction was 'hmmm you are likely a pick-pocket'. Sad, but true.

One positive thing about aging is this: all women your own age AND younger are attractive. So the older you get, the more women out there are pleasing to see.

So yeah, Sophia, us older guys will leer at your age group. But we're also leering at our own. That's a LOT more leering than a 20-something does :D :D :D

SophiaCDN 05-11-05 09:57 AM

edv: Are you sure she wasn't a prostitute? :bigthumb:

SophiaCDN 05-11-05 11:16 AM

But they do, looking for gentlemen such as yourself ;)
