After you read the article, and note the date 1980!, you'll realize that from the start Mazda was fighting a losing battle with the rotary. All of the awards and championships under its belt could have potentially been doubled, if not for BS legislation and inside policies to keep rotaries in classes where they stood no chance or could not compete at all.
This is what naturally happens when you try to be different and go against the flow, generally speaking.
Point: we should all be proud to own these cars.
