I seem to recal that MMO was taken off of the market because it caused hard core cancer...and it is only back on the market now because the americans sued canada under free trade and won...from what i can recall it is a way to bring cheap american gas up to octane standards in canada...you can try buying 97 octane at mohawk and get the same result without the cancer

There always seems to be some misinformation about MMO. For instance, MMO does not raise octane and its benefits have nothing to do with octane. The mention of cancer seems a bit overstated as petroleum distillates are widely used in society, many of them are known to cause cancer under certain conditions, and MMO is not an unusual petroleum distillate. I don't know the validity of the above free-trade/lawsuit comment, but it seems equally valid that the power of the consumer was the determining factor in the return of MMO to Canada... so maybe those inquiries paid off, who knows.

In following the posts about MMO over the last three years, MMO has a good track record. I see that it helps prevent carbon deposits from forming on the apex seals, to maintain good compression and prolong the life of the engine; it is often used to start flooded engines or locked/frozen engines; and some people are even mixing it with the oil for its lubricant properties.

I think in the final analysis, it comes down to affordability and personal choice - you can choose to use it or not use it. I've been using it for three years, and my 260k engine still has very good compression, so using MMO gives me some peace of mind. I buy the 16 oz. bottles ($3.50 US here), and put about 1/2 bottle in each tank of gas, which means I'm spending about $90 US/year on MMO. Is it worth $90 US/year?.. maybe yes, maybe no.

I always thought that MMO was a form of two stroke oil... or am I mistaken?

 

On a previous thread about it, someone said it was snake oil. But, I have no proof about that.

I think you are thinking about MMT (methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl) which Canada tried to ban in the late 1990's.

 

Never actually used the Marvel stuff before... but heard good things about it. I sometimes premix with 2-stroke, depending on wether I plan on beating the **** outta the FD or not. I still have my oil metering pump going so for normal driving I don't bother with any additives.

I do think it's a good thing that they bought it back though, for customers' sake.

I found a couple of cans of mmo kicking around at a local parts dealer and bought it up as soon as I could. But now they are out, and I hope crappy tire decides to sell it here in winnipeg too. I also heard that home hardware sells mmo, not around here yet, but I read another post claiming it was being sold at home hardware in ontario somewhere. I think my car runs a little better with some mmo in the gas tank and in the oil. If anyone knows if its in winnipeg could they post it or pm me.
