fuel tank storage

I bought a parts car a few months ago that has since been completely stripped. I've got a mint fuel tank (from the states) that I want to store for a 'rainy day'. After the fuel is drained from it (into my mower) what is the best way to store it empty long term?

Pour a litre of 2 stroke oil in there and roll it around to coat the entire inside of the tank.
If it is stored for longer than a year slosh around the oil to recoat the tank.
When you want to use the tank pour out the oil and then use gasoline to rinse out the tank.
*Not a proven theory on my part, so use at your own risk.*

I do not know what POR -15 is. Any oil would probably be good to coat the inside to help stop any rust.
I thought 2 stroke oil would be good as it would be less of a problem to completely remove the oil when you wanted to start using the tank.
Good luck keeping the rust demons away.

POR-15 is a epoxy paint, I wouldn't use it on the inside, fill it completely with used oil, and call it a day.

I'd put it on a shelf somewhere and forget about it. As long as it's in a dry place. Putting oil on the inside would probably help prevent moisture from reaching it, but if you were going that far you should protect the outside too.

if it's "mint" right now, it's probably not going to deteriorate as long as it stays in a dry environment.

you can paint the outside with POR-15 and it will pretty much never rust. google POR-15 to find out about it.

the inside...how about putting a crap load of desiccant inside with the cap on? haha...

Just use the old oil in the garage. The oil will penetrate the pores of the metal and it should never rust. With changing temps in Canada you will get too much condensation in the tank, those beads can only hold so much water.

Nismo they have industrial-grade desiccants you know designed for rust prevention.

anyways, these guys are located in Markham:
http://www.desican.ca/product.htm

here is a place i googled, they ship apparently:
http://www.agmcontainer.com/desiccantcity/

otherwise maybe just google to buy online? i've never actually bought the stuff myself. although now i have some crazy ideas about filling the entire car with desiccant for winter storage....lol

Yeah, those have a life they are good for too, we use them for compressors at work, they require too much maintenance. Used oil is free, and serving a purpose after you are done with it, take it to a recycling depot.
