Sorry I overlooked the fact that all you had to do was change a bumper and then you can import them. But why would you pay a storage fee for a car for over half of a year when all you need to do is change a bumper and you can then drive the car emediatly.
Daemon, I am not going to be getting my car from a place like Terra2 or Monkeys. I am going directly through eather www.japaneseusedcars.com, or www.hashinon.com or www.best-trade-auctions.com. This will save me a decent amount of money isntead of going through a broker. I do realise that this gives me more of a liability when it comes to the car concidering I don't have a second party involved to include some what of a guarontee but I am sure that if I do my fair share of research and shopping around that I can get a good deal.
But as I said, I'm not going to get into any more arguments with people on here about my chances of getting a decent FD for under 10grand. I will creat a thread as soon as my car is purchased and show pics of what I have bought, and then keep everyone informed of all costs that I incure during this process and give everyone a final price at the end and then we will see what kind of a deal I get then. Until then whats the point of debating this? No one is yet to give me any hard evidence to show that my figure are wrong and all it has been is people going off of personal opinions or rumours.

I don't think anybody really means to offend you in any way. We appreciate you taking one for the team and letting us know how your experience goes. Hopefully it works out for you but I gotta admit, I hate to see the value of the FD go down due to availability of JDM ones.
Keep us updated.
I know this has been repeated many times but it costs some money to own this car (and my car is stock and sits in the garage most of the time).
Insurance: $3000yr ($250/month?)
Gas: $960yr (1000km/month for 8 months a year, 500km per tank, $60 fill up)
Yearly maintenance: $160 ($60plugs, $100 oil changes and coolant)
Minimum Total Cost of ownership: $4000+ year (for a perfect running maintenance free FD)
Loan if you're borrowing: $300/month?
Minimum Total Loan + cost of ownership: $7600yr
Other scheduled maintenance: $50/month average? (brakes, coolant hoses, vacuum lines, tires)
Cost of storage if you don't have a garage: $100/month
Cost of winter beater + costs to run and maintain: ???
Cost of FD nightmares: ???
etc. etc.
I think what most people are saying is that the cost of an $8000 FD is nothing compared to the cost of owning it. So if "being able to finally afford an FD" is something you've thinking about then it might be a wise idea to take some advice from people who own one.
Here is some financial advice:
Cost of owning my FD including loan: $775/month
Cost of my mortgage not including taxes: $750/month

I understand that, and I already have a daily drive. I don't mean to brag but I make alot more on a average basis than your average person my age. Plus when I insure the car as a recreation vehicle my insurance wont be that high. I drive a 04 dodge ram with a hemi, I am used to high gas bills. Thats just a way of life and a cost that goes along with enjoying a vehicle that you own/drive. I am also expecting a decent amount of repair bills, but those bills don't make a difference if I own a JDM FD or a CAD FD. its just a way of life with FD's and I understand that and expect that. Between myself who is fairly mechanically inclined and my father who is a aircraft mechanic/welder I am pretty sure I won't have too many issues with the vehicle that I don't be able to handle.

I only posted in your thread to point out that deals can be had more locally than Japan. I have assisted my cousin in importing 3 GTRs from Japan and each car had its own individual set of issues relating to the car or the importing process.
You can do what ever you like but I think you've gotten some very good advice from knowledgable members.
Good luck with your search and I look forward to following your threads.
You guys must be getting creamed on insurance, i think mine is about 90$ a month with a reasonable deducatable (200 or 500 can't remember) and 5 million liability. Mind you that's coupled with another car, and home insurance as well, so i'm sure there is some package deals in play somewhere.
What about a 91 FD?
And what exactly is a MKV?

I rest my case.
Football 22:
FYI the RIV program involves a lot more then installing a bumper..
READ GUYS BEFORE YOU IMPORT

That price does not include getting the thing over here. By the those are on your door step you are looking at something close to $20000
I think Football22 has things under control. I have been looking at getting one from japan also mostly because it's not that bad of a deal. I believe some sites have FD's shipped to calgary for around $9000. Now, I do not know if these run or how long they will run for. these cars seem to have about 100k on them, ok body condition, but some day they have been in an accident and repaired. The first ones should be popping up now. I'm waiting to see if it is worth it, I'm sure football22 is also.
In the end if the condition sucks, 10g for a shell is pretty steep.
From what I can tell, importing does seem to be a cheaper way out.

Ontario does get creamed on insurance compared to you guys!

Well I might have come across a really good deal on a FD. I e-mailed the company last night and have been talking back and forth somewhat to figure out all prices involved and to find out the over all condition of the car. It is a auction grade A3.5 so it has been in a accident but does not require any repairs as all repairs have been done. The car has 100,000km on it and only mods on the car are rims, apexi exhaust and bilstein shocks. According to their inspectors the car has no mechanical issues. I have asked for a compression check to be done and for them to give me these numbers, along with checking over the turbos to make sure they are okay. I woke up this morning to find out that the status of the car is "Negotiating" so that means someone has already put a offer in on the car. If that all falls apart I will be making a offer on this car depending on the results of the compression/turbo tests. The car is listed at 480,000JPY which after their fees and taxes works out to be around 500,000JPY since that 480,000JPY is a FOB price. I will let you all know how things go for the next couple of days as I am waiting to hear back on an e-mail from the company and waiting to see how their "negotiation" goes on the price of the car. Since it isn't business hours in Japan right now I probubly won't have a answer til late tonight, and still might not have anything sorted out til the end of the week. But as I said I will keep you all posted.

Car's been in an accident? Hmmm, what kind of accident?
Cars are never the same when they're involved in accidents...
Chris77777777,
Where you been buddy?? You just pop in whenever you have the chance, huh?
Nismo,
You bored in the 2nd gen forum or something? Did I do something to you I wasn't aware of??

When I get to my home computer I will post up the info that they have sent me, everything is in a e-mail at my house. I have the auction sheet for the car, pictures of under the hood, the front of the car where the accident was and all that.
Here are some picture of the car I was looking at. I have just recieved an e-mail saying that the car was sold. So I asked to find out what it was sold for, and as soon as I find out I will let you all know. But my search still continues and I will let you all know how it goes.

kind of hard to tell much from those pics. there is obviously nothing major wrong with the exterior/interior. but things like the chassis, engine, electrical, those are all hard to say unless you are inspecting the car first hand. unless that auction sheet gives that info.
if it was a front-end collision, it would really depend how severe it was. you don't know if it was a minor fender-bender or a large impact. anything is fixable, but sometimes a car is just not the same after. just my thoughts on that.

Good to see that car is going through all its inspections, driving form place to place and sitting in a lot till sold on an EMPTY tank of gas. Lets hope the one you buy doesnt sit like that for two long, not good on your fuel lines, tank, injectors and such. Condensation is a no no.................
Also, i dont mean to burst any bubbles but, it seems to me that buying any car from a local seller can be chisty. How many sellers out there lie through their teeth when selling you a car. When you call them on the phone after seeing a add its always the same story. They make it sound so great and how theres nothing wrong, then you go see it and wonder if the guy should have his eys and ears checked. Its rusty or ticking etc....
I just could not buy something going by what some guy is saying about it over seas, cause we all know waht people will say or do to make a sale........either lie like carzy or down play the problem!

That is definatly going to be something that I might come across, it all depends on the car. One good thing about that company is that I have seen a couple of cars go up For Sale on their page, and within a couple of days they have re-posted the car with up to date info on the car after they have done a full inspection. I have seen one car get its priced reduced durastically due to overheating marks found, and another one dropped due to a bad engine. So since I have seen them find these problems before, and make them public that gives me a little more trust in them. But also makes me more carefull when purchasing a car.
I just decided to check out a couple of importers websites and came across this car. I can purchase it from JDM connections for $8900 which includes all costs to have this car ready for registration in Vancouver.
