As is typical with the media, they left out some key facts.

The vehicle in question was a "neighbourhood electric vehicle", or basically a glorified golf kart. It doesn't have the proper bumpers, crash structure or brakes to be considered a road going "real" car. If I was paranoid, I would say they left this out to play on popular beliefs that the public has with electric vehicles, but I'm not that crazy.

Just like regular golf karts, there are only certain places these can be driven and they cannot exceed 40 KM/H. Can only be driven on private property, on roads with a speed limit less then 40 KM/H, etc.

However real electric cars that meet the same safety regulations petrol/diesel vehicles do are no problem. Get some insurance, take it to the MOT with a current safety and walk out with a set of plates and a registration that lists the power type as "E" (I believe it's "E"....it's been a while).

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dan...icle/emerging/

I fully agree with them. I don't want to see fancy golf karts on main roads and on the highway.

This the loop hole that hybrid can avoid b/c the gas is still being burnt above 40km/h
As there is no such law, there is no such loop hole, therefore there is no need to avoid it.

It is also quite possible with the current crop of hybrids to exceed 40 KM/H on the electric motor if you are light on the throttle.

how many people can/would drive less then 40km/h on a daily basis?
Ever drive downtown in any major city?

Hey don't forget, gas is still cheaper than bottled water - which is the only potable water in some countries. Soon enough even our tap water will probably be more expensive than gas. Be grateful that we have plenty of both in Canada.

It would be nice to buy gas and store it in a tank .... but itd go sour before you finish it :P.... .this is the frist time that im acutally trying to go close to the speed limit. who cars about ic-F#$%#-bc and their were doing more traffic enforcement to take "dangerous drivers off the road" these gas prices are going to do it for them!

I really love to hear how all these oil companies are seeing record profits even though "refining costs are going up" since there are "fears of depleting reserves". anyhow, im buying energy stocks.

I heard on the radio that the government says they have very little control over the price of gas to the point it's not worth doing anything about it. However their is a 28% tax on gas. wtf is up with that???

What really gets me is that the price of gas in the US is cheaper then here in Canada YET we supply the US with the most oil out of any other country.

Anyways, I've been doing hypermiling to squeeze as much mpg as I can.

Dont know which is worst...
Have your car held up by a shop for months...or park it at the drive way with empty tank (2 weeks now).

I really don't see a point to parking the car because of gas prices. The prices aren't going to come down in the long run and are only going to get more expensive as years go by. Your really losing money in the end. You park it in your garage waiting for prices to come down, they don't but go up, you get fed up waiting and drive it anyway at the higher prices later on. Or you just can't take the gas prices and sell it, in which case your still losing money since higher gas prices means lower old performance value cars because you waited hoping the gas prices would drop (especially for old cars with mileage).

If the prices bother you so much, get a hybrid or those all electric cars that are going to start coming out in 2010 (or was it 2009? I forget). Let someone else enjoy your car because it is just getting old and losing value in the garage.

Gas prices are going to hit at least $1.40 this year and going up as you go along, if you don't like it, sell your car or at least don't complain about parking your car because of gas prices.

My 2 cents, i'm burning as much fuel as I can this year while its still affordable and enjoying my car

With the price this high...i can not drive rx7 daily (which i wanted to do this summer). I have to stick with my winter dd....and drive rx7 occasionally...

That's why i said its...mostly just sitting on the drive way.

I heard a radio survey last summer where 65% of those people sruvey'd in TO said that the would not purchase fuel at prices higher then 1.25/L. At that time, 91 octane was like 1.22/L............I didn't really believe that survey to be accurate - and it apparently isn't.

People just like to moan about it because you're held ransom by the oil company. The infastructure can't have changed that much over the past four months to necessitate a 40% increase in cost, so the gripes are somewhat justified.

I'm just waiting to see the corelation between record high gas prices and record high oil company profits stop (which it won't). I don't mind paying for gas and fully understand that it will go up in time and will go up indefinetly, but taking advantage of the "monopoly" card is what really jerks my chain.

Well we all chose Rx7's as a hobby, we knew they weren't great on gas, and it's obviously only going to go up, we've know this for years, nothing we can do, and complaining only makes it worse, so just enjoy it! Anywho I'll just go enjoy my stock turbo car, and call it a day.

We also all choose to drive, at least you city people have the choice of taking the loser cruiser (public transportation)

Paying for fuel is like paying for an oil change. It's necessary to drive the car. I enjoy driving my car more than I hate paying for gas, so in the end, I'm still having fun. That's why I got a job that pays me enough (usually) to enjoy my passion.

yeah, gas prices are high. whatever.
the worse part though is recently i heard for the oil companies to not make any profit, the price of oil would have to be MUCH lower than it currently is.
this is indicated by the fact that the price of oil has gone up almost 40% since last year or two, but the price at the pump has only gone up about 20%. there is much more to this than supply and demand, and the actual "price" of oil is much more variable and mythical than a lot of other raw resources. and in the end the consumers, ordinary folk, ultimately get screwed.

$2.36L in ireland right now. I just about puked when I filled my rental.

But on the other hand a cup of coffee can be hand for $3.65!! Give or take 60Cents.

Gas prices are not high enough which is really apparent when you try to drive anywhere around the GTA.

Ian you lost me with your last statement.

thewird - I don't think anyones whining, I think everyone is calling a spade a spade.

The price of gas today is based on FUTURES price in the market. Futures price is what the price MIGHT be in 2 months or so. The price your local shell bought gas at is the price FUTURES price WAS 2 months ago when they purchased it. The reason for the inflation is based on 2 fears: fears of depletion, and fears of rising prices (ironic, I know).

The only way gas prices will go down, is if on a GLOBAL SCALE (not really, lets jsut say CANADA/US, since the US uses like 80% of the worlds resources), everyone uses LESS gas. What does this mean? Carpool, take the bus, walk the short trips, plan out your routes, find a closer job or move closer to your job or just work from home! As long as the supply is there, these fears of depletion and demand will continue to escalate.

I predict riots and strikes at $2/Liter here in Toronto.
