door problem

So tonight I go to get into my car and the driver door will not open. I think the lock might have broke and is holding the door shut...nothing happens when the switch is moved up and down. Has anyone else ever had this problem, and how can I fix it. Probably won't have a chance to take the door apart until monday. Any suggestions??

Brad

That's exactly the problem. There are little plastic clips that hold all the rods in place. When those break - the locks and or the door handle wont operate.

The biggest problem with this is that removing the door panel with the door shut is a huge pain in the *** - it can be done though.

Park the car in a garage for a while to let it warm up. Cold plastic is really brittle, and will crack as soon as you put ant tension on it. What you will have to do is loosen the door panel as much as possible, and squeeze your arm in behind it. There is a plastic barrier that is held on with tar. This **** will get everywhere - all up your arm and probably all over the inside of the car - watch out for it. Once you've weaseled your arm into the door, the next trick is to find the leaver that accuates the lock mechanism - that will let yo open the door. Once the door is open, you can remove the door panel fully, and have a proper look inside. Most likely wo will see a metal rod that has come detached from the lock linkage. It is now just a matter of getting a new clip and reattaching the rod.

While you are in there, lube up all of the handle and lock assembly. If it moves - lube it. (words to live by) You don't want to have to do this all again for a sticky handle!

Ok, this is common in 2nd gen rx. It can be the plastic clip but i had that problem and its a spring the brakes from being used and it brakes off. So take the locks off compleatly and find the srping and bend it back into a hook to reaply it, then your locks will work fine, mine work better. If you live in Ottawa give me a call and I can do it for you. Good luck.

thanks for the tip...but I fixed the problem last year. It wasn't the locks...my driver side lock cyclinder is like mush inside...power locks fixed that problem, the problem with the door was the hook that connects to the door handle had bent over the years to the point where you could not move it enough to fully open the latch for the door
