Differential Series 2 vs Series 3
Differential Series 2 vs Series 3
I have a 1983 GSL Limited slip diff and a 1984 GS open diff. (Installed on car). Which one should I use on my RX7? Should I just keep the GS diff and swap out the LSD guts or should I fix up the Series 2 diff and use that? I know the Series 2 has the smaller bearings and the Series 3 has the larger ones. I also have the drive shaft from the 83 GSL. My GS driver side outer bearing is wearing out also.. The GSL diff. is older too.
I can't seem to find any good info on what Diff is the best to go with. Thanks for any help.

I would probably swap the whole rear end too, even if the 84 has bigger stronger axles. If you're only making 155hp, the bigger axles won't matter much. I would rather have the stronger gsl lsd and rear disk brakes.
Thanks for the info
I got the rear GSL and GS diff pulled, painted the GSL axle and almost ready to go back on the car. I am waiting on the small bearings to come in for the axle shafts and a used set of calipers off of Ebay.
The 83 GSL rear end has the rear disk brake brackets welded directly to the rear end itself. So I'm going with that and swapping the pumpkin from my GS (Low Km's). The guts (LSD and side bearings) I'll swap into the GS pumpkin.
Disassembled the LSD and it's in pretty good shape for being +30 years old! Measurements are well within spec. !
Backlash set to .004" and 90 degrees all around. Seems good but still worries me a little. Pinion was not removed or adjusted. I marked the side bearing adjustment lockers but had to go in another 2 notches away from the pinion to make the backlash correct. Pattern looks good.
