Daytona 24hr Win!
Daytona 24hr Win!
Am I the only one who noticed that a ROTARY POWERED car won the GT class at the 24 hours of Daytona? (lol) Sylvain Tremblay (orginally from Quebec) won with his tube chassis 3 rotor RX-8!
I noticed, along with the fact there were what 22 cautions for hmmm let's see six hours? Great for the rotary to return to winners circle though! I was up at 5:55 this morning to watch final coverage so I'm off to crash for the night.
Lotsa rotorheads watching. I hate the DPs but love the GTs.

My Favorite was when they were in car with Sylvain driving. Ah, a sequential gearbox.........Then he spun by himself (it was night) the commentators were wondering what was wrong etc. I was with him in the car, he just missed! He IS human like the rest of us! No damage or anything, he kept it lit, remembered our old track saying "when in a spin both feet in" and got it into 1st and drove away.
the race was fantastic. I went to the one last year but i got busy and me and my dad forgot to get tickets this year. Any info or specs on the 3 rotor? I kinda thought it was a modified renesis...
I spoke to one of the drivers in the race yesterday, Glen Nixon. He was the primary driver of the #44 Bullet Racing Porsche 996 GT3 car out of Vancouver Canada. He started the race, finished the race, drove 5 hours at night, in the rain and when I was talking to him he was towing the car home to Vancouver behind his 1 ton Chevy van.
The story was great as it really covered the issues a "relatively" low buck team would have trying to run the 24. He told me of racing at night with the windshield completely opaque and judging where he is on track by looking out the side windows. He did this for over 1 hour and was still turning very competitive times. Other really cool points were the outright speed of the RX8's. They were over 20 mph faster than he was going into the braking zone for the chicane going into turn 3 on the tri-oval. The 997's were also much stronger than the 996's, their car was the only one.
They ran the whole 24 with only 1 pit crew and a couple of subs. He said that they were the real hero's as the drivers could get away for a couple of hours, but the crew had to be ready to go at a moments notice for the whole race and had to setup and teardown the whole shebang.
What I thought was cool was the durability of the 996 that they ran. It is the ex-Nonnamaker Sahlen car and had a rebuilt motor, new clutch, new hubs, rebuilt shocks and a complete cleanup/ paint from when the Nonnamakers ran it. The car finished the race with the same rotors, calipers, transmission and basically everything else that came with the car when they bought it. The car is a 4 year old tub car, factory engine, albeit highly modified and is still competitive with the new cars.
No disrespect meant to the RX8, but it is a full tube chassis car with a full race engine. The 997 Porsche, Ferrari, Vette and Club Racer Mustangs are tub cars with modified street motors and the GX8 is another tube chassis car with a street motor and the frontal area of a bus.
Grand Am really wants the RX8 to succeed and the announcers stated that the car can go 5000 miles on a motor that costs $15,000 between rebuilds and the rebuilds only cost $8,000. It is the new privateer car of choice in Grand Am.
Way to go Mazda.

Who cares about some dumb volkswagen? (lol) The engine in the RX-8 is a peripheral port, which has nothing to do with a renesis rotary. Btw, all "Renesis" means is Rotary and Genesis combined (next generation rotary). Also what the announcers didnt tell you was that the price tag on the RX-8 for a privateer team..................$280,000!
Only $280,000 WOW!!!!!
Sign me up for a couple, LOL.
Actually it is still less than having to build one yourself if you count the time to assemble, weld, grind, paint, drill, design and develop.
Where else can you buy a turnkey car and win for that money. Way to go Speedsource.

Good story. Thanks for taking the time to share it.
It always amazes me to see the passion and energy that goes into any motorsport especially as a low budget effort. Kudos to your fellow.
