ON Catalytic Converter Options

Hey everyone,

Looking to get a Magnaflow rear main catalytic converter.

My preferred choice: PART# 94016
MagnaFlow Catalytic Converters - 49-STATE & CANADA Catalytic Converters For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

NOT READILY AVAILABLE

My alternate choice: PART# 94116
MagnaFlow Catalytic Converters - 49-STATE & CANADA Catalytic Converters For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

The body is 3" SHORTER. AVAILABLE TO BUY TODAY

Do you think I'm getting "less of a cat" with my alternate choice?
I feel like I may be killing the already-small chance of passing the emissions test...

Need your thoughts and opinions before I pull the trigger and buy the alternate part number...

I have what looks like your first choice after two summers +-10k Kms pretty well toast, blocked or F@#Ked. Don't think either will pass, I believe I passed last spring because mine was already on it's way out. The heat just kills these! Good luck anyway, a new stock cat is about 2 grand.

I've put a few OB2 high flow cats in some of my customer cars where the smell really gets to them. It's around $500 though just for the cat. Pretty much any $100-$200 cat will simply burn out if the car is driven hard and doesn't do much for smell even when its healthy.

Remember this rule; Cats don't die, they're killed. On a car that is running perfectly fine the catalytic convertor should last the life of the vehicle. Magnaflow cats are cheaply made, I've seen a couple clog up for no reason at all. Another problem with aftermarket cats is some manufacturers skimp out on the precious metals (platnium, palladium and rhodium) and use inferior materials for substrate which makes them more susceptible to clogging up or melting. I have used some aftermarket cats with good results. I've found Canadian Tire's Maremont and Walker brand cats are pretty good.

The size doesn't necessarily matter as much, just the placement and temperature. So it has to be close to the manifold but not too close. Too far and it wont do anything because itll never reach operating temp. Also for proper oxidization of HC molecules the air pump should be installed.

I'm using one of these in the stock main cat location, the precats have been replaced by an RB downpipe. So far, so good after a couple summers, but my car is NA, and hasn't been to a lapping day for a while, just autocross, so it only sees sustained hard use in one minute increments.
