Bringing Cars From the US

If I wanted to buy and import into Canada a car from the US that is a 2005 Model Year, is it possible and what would be the costs?

Any of you importation guys know what we need to do?

Eric

Best guide is right here from the source:

Registrar of Imported Vehicles - Importing a Vehicle

Basically, if it's less than 15 years old, make sure it's on the RIV Admissibility List. If it is, you'll usually need a letter from the manufacturer stating no recalls are outstanding (as I recall, Honda, for examplle, can be sticky on giving those out) and get all of the required paperwork to your boarder crossing of choice 72 hours in advance of crossing.
Pay import duty, if applicable, depending where the vehicle was built, at crossing. Make any required modifications for inspection. (ie Daytime Running Lights.)

Just read the admissability list and to bring the car in is easy, but the only place I can get the car adapted is at the dealership. That will be cheap. Need to make a few calls before going ahead.

Thanks,

Eric

Make sure you have all your paperwork in order.

Ideally you have the title faxed to US customs where you plan on crossing 72 hours in advance and get the export stamp to comply with US law. Lots of people have skipped this step without a problem, but to be legal you've got to do it.

As far as taxes go you're looking at 13% for HST, $75 or $100 (I forget which) for A/C even if it doesn't have it, Duty sometimes if it's a foreign car (depends on the customs officer doing the paperwork and how lucky you get), and that's about it.
Have lots of proof about how much the car cost if you got it for below market value.

Salvage/rebuilt cars are generally not worth the hassle to import. Flood damage history is inadmissable.

You need a recall clearance letter from the manufacturer too I think (I haven't brought much into the country that's less than 15 years old)

What are you planning on bringing across, and at what city?
What car

Looking at a mid 2003-2005 XJR and the RIV says that it only can be brought into compliance by an authorized Jaguar Canada Dealership. I checked with my local store and the amount makes it pretty expensive and removes a ton of the incentive to bring it in. So for now, my blue skying is really dark storm clouds.
