Boring night at the shop....lets see what fits in an RX-7!!

So I got this new RHD shell and was wanting to build it into a racecar....I figured I'd build a motor for it over the winter and cage it, then have some fun at Mosport or lapping days with it.

I've had this RB20 motor in the corner for a while so I decided to see if it'd fit.

Should I do it :D

nik 12-01-06 10:07 PM

I say keep the rotax!!!

Nismo Convert86 12-01-06 10:12 PM

Going to need a way to control any Engine you install. Haltech GB!!!!

R.P.M. 12-01-06 10:15 PM

Yeap, Haltech E8 is on its way!

Vicious7 12-01-06 10:30 PM

I think you have waaay too much time on your hands, dude ;)

Let's see you put that thing together...

KaoticFdR1 12-02-06 02:27 AM

thats sexy...have fun with it.

JDK 12-02-06 07:25 AM

Thats just wrong Joe.....

rd_turbo 12-02-06 07:31 AM

Dang Jim...I was just going to compliment how neatly it tucked in there....80's Japanese cars were so accommodating....

WankelingBeer 12-02-06 11:59 AM

Theres nothing like a reliable 2nd gen muhahahaha:fawk:

R.P.M. 12-02-06 01:12 PM

Well it was just a thought :)

It does seem to fit pretty good, it'll need a custom oil pan and pick up tube. There is lots of room on the passenger side for a much larger turbo :D
Even the Skyline transmission almost fits the in the stock RX-7 location, only 1/2 an inch out!

That motor thats in the car was a blown one from a customers R32 and I dont really want to rebuild it so I dont think I'll go through with the project.

Lazy bastard!!! :balls: LOL.

coldfire 12-02-06 05:47 PM

Well, if it were a certain other RB series, the 26, i might say go for it, but it's not as exciting with the 20. my opinion.
but hey, it would be an interesting experiment.

R.P.M. 12-02-06 06:32 PM

Well I really like the RB20...although I have yet to drive any other Skyline, the RB20 revs to the sky and pulled very nice and was smooth.
I would shift off 8500 and it seemed to like it :D

I *may* use this blown motor as a mock up for the mounts and stuff, then just go pick up a j-spec motor and wire it up.
Eric - I'll do it if you feature it in the mag :)

Whizbang 12-02-06 06:40 PM

nice fitment. i wish i had more motors laying around.

yup, i'm definetly not denying any of the RB series is a nice piece of engine.
actually, i'm a big fan of most inline six engines. very nice config for a cylinder humper (piston engine).

Done, if you build it AND I get to test drive it ;)

cam75w/ls1 12-02-06 08:27 PM

I've got my 1997 dodge diesel apart right now, want to stick the 6b diesel in for fun?Might need to move the firewall a little... :Kill1: But hey it's only putting out 1200 ft lbs torque right now w/ the mods.

01Racing 12-02-06 09:05 PM

Joe, you dont happen to have one of those 572 Chevy's in the corner do you? You know, the 720HP out of the box ones? I bet you could make that fit too!

Ottoman 12-03-06 05:48 AM

Nice man

I have an RB25DET and an S4 Turbo II.. that I was thinking of doing the same thing as well...

u just saved me alot of hassle for test fitting as well... HEHE

I'll be using the Greddy Intake instead of the gay lookin stock one..

the RB25 Tranny is much beefier... and my car is LHD... i hope i don't have to hack the chassis...

Haha, I'll make anything fit.
I love weird motor swaps into other vehicles, theres actually a 99 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS in the local scrap yard I've been trying to get ahold of, I'd love to put a rotary in there and make the car reliable LOL.

rotary downshift 12-03-06 02:22 PM

joe ... wanna sell me the blown engine?..

Feds 12-03-06 02:52 PM

Damn, and I've been wasting my time looking at COE trucks.

classicauto 12-04-06 10:16 AM

a real swap for the 7 would be a huge diesel.......some cummins power, and more over the power would be - TORQUE!!hehe

See a 7 doing burn outs and tossing huge plooms of black dieselly smoke!! nice!

FC3S.USD 12-04-06 02:47 PM

rb20 waste of time in my opinion, 13b over that any day.

now rb26 maybe even rb25 .
