I think you can take the battery to the firestation. Im not sure on this at all, but I do that for paint, etc. So they must be able to take them.


Other option would be to ask the retailer that sells you the battery. Im sure they would know where to dispose of it, or maybe they can take them.

 

I was curious about these batteries myself. I haven't heard enough testimonials about them though to take the plunge.

As far as getting rid of old batteries, most landfills will take them for a fee. I would also think that garages would as well; again, for a fee.

 

I'm not sure I'm prepared to give up on the old battery just yet. At this point, I have to consider waiting until next season before I go dropping another battery in. I'll try to get an Odyssey this week, but I'd like to take one more kick at the cat to try and refresh this battery. If anyone has any low-cost suggestions, I'm willing to give them a try.

 

I threw the battery from my Rx-7 into my Miata one spring to charge it for a couple days. Since the miata was new, it was easy to start, so you really didnt need any power. I just kept that booster pack in the back incase. Seemed to work okay.

 

I happened to be in at A N D Battery today. They just got a bunch of Odyssey battery's in. Good prices and they have a whole bunch of sizes and shapes etc etc.

 

I'm in the midst of dealing with the manufacturer to get pro-rated on a replacement battery. Failing that, about how much is A N D charging for a battery?

I'm leaning towards pulling the pin until April now. I'd only get a week's worth of use out of the battery before I have to shut 'er down for the winter now.

 

The odyssey battery that compares to an optima red top was like $200 $220 something like that. It was actually cheaper than the optima. 1000+ cold cranking amps.

I guess the odyssey batteries use plates of pure lead. Killer warranty too i think it was 4 year full replacement. It's even garunteed to function if the case is ever cracked or broken.

 

As it turns out, the manufacturer is going to give me a deal. I can't produce a receipt, but the manufacturer is going to pro-rate me on replacing the old one. I can get a new one for $120 rather than pay the $329 that Battery World sells them for.

I don't want to bash the manufacturer, because I think they're doing good by me. That being said, if you were to tally up all the negative feedback I've received from forum members about the Optima batteries and weigh it against all the positve responses, I think you'd find there was a very strong trend...

good and the problem was with the charging system) customer buys battery
and it goes dead returns it get a free replacement)
They are charged tested pass delabeled and put up for sale with a 90 warranty.
Of all the ones I have sold in the last 10 years I had only one return
which was not the fault of the battery rather a hole was made into the side
from who know what.

Wal-Mart Optima's on sale starting today or tomorrow $139 (with trade in battery), check you local flyer if you insist on having one of these lead weights in your sports car....

 

For future reference, what's the trick to charging these things when they're dead? I have a consumer-grade charger, and I've tried charging the battery at 2a, 10a, and even 50a.

I have Odyssey 1200T's in my garage still boxed... I'll sell it if you want it...

 

The key is to never let the battery go dead. If it is completely stone dead then it has been damaged. Charging it can reverse a cell in which case the battery is junk.

But generally if the battery totally dead you need to apply a higher voltage (16 - 18V) for a few hours to start the charge process, then you can taper down to 14V or so at LOW current (below 10A). When it's completely charged, discharge it again to about 12V and then recharge. It will then start to recover some capacity as it's used but will never be new again.
