Appraisal required to insure with Collision coverage??

I've been with the same company for several years now and each season I yank of the road coverage on my 88 Vert when I put it in storage and have it put back on in the spring.

I just got off the phone with my company and they are telling me that they can no longer insure for collision without my presenting them with an appraisal of the car. She told me it is required when insuring a car 15 years or older. When I asked her why this was a non-issue in the past with the car being 21 years old now she didn't really have an answer for me - at least not one that I can understand....

Has anyone experienced this before?

Know any good and cheap appraisers who are RX7 enthusiasts?

Advice?

Thanks

I think it might be a new thing that all of them are doing now, but most definitely everyone is saying that about 15+ year old cars. I am Running liability only until I get a few more things cleaned up.

Someone mentioned appraisers at the meet two weeks ago. At this point I don't trust anyone the insurance companies send me to but they should take appraisals from anyone who is licensed to do them. I'll be interested to find out what people have to say as I will need this service soon too. Wondering if its worth a post in the Sherway Gardens meet, since at least someone there mentioned it.

You will have to shop around to find a company that will give you collision or comp without an appraisal by a certified appraiser of your choosing and $$.
If you find one be sure to post it up here as a lot of us are getting hosed paying high rates on a 20 + yr old car and only getting coverage if we dent someone elses ride.

Mine declared it was their policy to only provide liability on cars over 15 yrs old. That was 2 yrs ago when my baby was still a teenager. (1988=19yrs old)
I asked the same dumb question as to why they insured me previously when it had passed the 15 yr. mark and they had no answer.

When dealing with Insurance for an old sporty type ride, bend over and take it like the rest of us.
They say the less you struggle the less it hurts. Some consolation when your getting it in the back door.

Good luck getting coverage for your ride.

Strange. I've been with the same company since early 06, and my car was 22yrs old at the time (84 FB). I put the full coverage back on in at the end of March and have heard nothing about needing an appraisal. It wouldn't shock me if they say something eventually, but so far I've had no problems and I have a decent rate. An 02 Sunfire and the 7, both with full coverage cost me less than $250/month. I'm just about to turn 24 so that's pretty decent. Can't wait til next June when I turn 25. Should be pretty happy with my premium then.

Hey guys,

This is a standard rule that all insurance companies would have. In most cases, it might just get overlooked and so they don't ask for an appraisal.

One option you possibly have is to insure the car as a 'Classic'. They still would require an appraisal, but the insurance premium would work out to a fraction of the cost. Only downfall to this is that they have fairly strict rules about kms, etc.

If you want some more info on the classic car insurance, let me know and i'll see what i can dig up.

I was asked for an inspection a couple years back, but haven't been asked for an appraisal. I should probably have one done anyway, for my own protection. Experience has taught that if I have an older, well cared for car, I'll get screwed when I get hit by some idiot, because insurance will only pay for "market value", which they now determine by looking at the classifieds and auctions, not by looking at your car. And of course the classifieds are heavily populated with beaters when it comes to cars more than a few years old - most newer or better condition cars get taken as trades by dealers. So your repair/compensation amount gets based on lowest common denominator cars, irrespective of condition and options on your own.
Example - a few years ago, my wife got rear-ended in our well maintained, loaded 80's vintage 626 Touring at a light downtown by a cell-phone-jabbering SUV driver. The car was beyond repair at any price, and she was injured besides. We were offered $1300 by insurance, which we managed to fight all the way up to $1900. I spent two months shopping in the $4000-$5000 price range and didn't find anything comparable in terms of features/options, interior/exterior condition, and mechanical condition - I finally gave up and bought a Jetta GLi that did not measure up on any of those dimensions, although it was a fun and economical car to drive, when it wasn't suffering random VW electrical problems that would disable it and defy diagnosis by myself and pro's.

Is the "classic" coverage dartheo refers to any different than "pleasure use", which my 7 is currently covered by? That limits mileage to 5000km/annually (I'm usually less) and no to-from work.

Yeah I'm talking about something completely different from 'pleasure use'

I got a bit more info for you guys. There are 2 different plans that they have:

Silver Wheel Plan
For non-modified cars

Custom Wheel Plan
For modified/custom cars

edit: Here are their rules

Hope this helps

Hmm, since "any type of racing activity", including "time trials", etc, is excluded, I wouldn't qualify, even if the coverage were offered here in Alberta (I'm assuming since the broker is in Ontario, it would apply to Ontario residents). Of course, under the wording of Alberta law, insurers can (and do) deny coverage based on any sort of participation in motorsports including time trials (meaning autoslalom, solosprint, and drags are included), so anyone who tracks their car in a timed setting technically can't get automobile insurance. Which just makes liars out of thousands of people in order to get the street insurance they are also required by law to have.

I do appraisals for insurance here.

They're pretty basic, and alot of companies ask for them now on older cars.

Don't confuse this appraisal with one of those green "value" sheets for the ministry, they're two entirely different things....

We charge $75 for an app, but we need to see the car (or at least meet) because we need a myriad of pics. You get a pretty little summary sheet and a bunch of pics when you're done.

Hey Joe, I saw that you do appraisals in a search i did on the site.

Fair enough to say you will be seeing this car mid July!

I believe you spoke with my father this morning. The car was originally his, then he passed it to me and I did some work to it and in the past year and a bit have lost interest in the car and was trying to sell it. Rather than see it sell my dad wants to fix it up.

Not sure if you remember but I brought this same car out to you for a paint and body quote a few years back but I never got around to getting the work done. With my fathers fire (and funds) under my *** you can bet it will get done now.

That being said, you may have an incremental role in not only writing the appraisal but also creating a share of the market value! Haha see you in July
