Anyone know anything about this 79 RX-7?

Hi guys, just got back from looking at a 79 LE for sale thats located outside Chesley. Its a nice car overall, but has a few issues that I think affects the value of the car a bit, not knowing a whole lot about the history of the car. Its got a rebuilt engine with 80000km, some underbody rust, slight idle problems with a bit of stumbling, and a few other small issues. The electrical and vacuum system (aka rats nest) has been removed and the hot start assist is not hooked up and suspected non functional. The car has 186000km on it. Decent car overall and everything seems to work. The guy is asking $4400 for it, which seems high. High points are what looks like a Racing Beat exhaust, original spare wheel and tire look to never have been used, and most of the interior is in decent shape, with the exterior having a fairly recent paint job.

I'm wondering if anyone in the Chesley area, or Ontario in general knows anything about this car. Maybe a past owner is on the forums? Here is the rather vague kijiji ad: http://guelph.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehic...AdIdZ293945754

If your specifically looking for an SA then that's a pretty decent car and the stumbling/idle issues can probably be taken care of in an hour with a screwdriver. Possibly fuel filter clogged. Maybe a carb rebuild at worst. The hot start assist isn't necessary. I haven't had mine for years. I paid more than that for my 84, and it's probably in worse shape. If you didn't, go back and check under the storage bins for the inner fender rust. If there is any, run away. Sorry, don't know anything about that particular car.

Yes I am aware of the storage bin rust, and on that car in particular its hard to get in to see that rust, as it doesn't have the bins, only the solid panel. about the only things really going for it over another 79 I looked at are the fact its an LE with proper LE wheels and spare wheel, new paint job, racing beat exhaust and good tires.

I have my eye on a 79 in Barrie for $2000 less that is completely rust free, runs like new, has all the proper stuff still on the engine (all original), and has a good steering box and brakes. This car is so clean that it still has most of the original paint on the underbody. More or less trying to decide which is the better deal. It doesn't look like this 79 from barrie needs really anything besides tires to pass safety inspection. The 79 LE needs rust repair on the underbody in at least one spot along with a brake job I think. Pedal had to go down REAL far to get any braking power.

From what I know about the Chesley car, go for the one in Barrie.

On another note, Bohnert and I were just through Bognor tonight checking out the cruise route for the BCM that starts tomorrow.

Well that changes everything. A set of wheels and new paint but the car still requires body work isn't worth the extra money. Get the one that's pristine, and buy a set of wheels for a few hundred bucks.

Nice to hear that its going through here, unfortunately I won't be around to see you guys go through. Hoping I can decide on a decent one in the next couple weeks here and at least get the rest of the summer in, maybe meet up with you guys for a little meet or something.

Orion, this is basically what I am thinking, although the wheels on the barrie 79 are in great shape. Good SA wheels are a little tough to come across last time i checked and I like the way a stock 7 looks. My taste in cars has changed a bit since I owned my 82. Like I said, I'm looking for a nice, clean 7 that will most likely stay with a stock body, unless I come into enough money to properly install a Mariah mode one widebody kit (always been a dream of mine) and some nice mesh wheels to fit it.

I've gone down the road of extensive underbody rust before its something I really don't wish to deal with again. Its not quite as bad if proper replacement panels are available, but there is nothing available for the 7 in this area of rust repair. I would rather deal with having to rebuild an engine or completely rebuild the suspension on a car before I ever deal with a rusty body again.

Even if the Barrie car needs minor suspension work (springs and shocks are all fine, checked them), replacing the few interior parts it needs, and putting new tires on it, and a decent paint job, I would likely still come out ahead of where I would be with the 79 in Chesley, so the 79 LE is out. Its now likely either the Barrie 79 or a 84 -SE in Ajax that looks like it is in good shape.

Well certainly take your time. I bought mine for $5K and after getting my hands into it I realized it wasn't quite worth that much. Still in decent shape, but not 5 grand decent. Didn't help that every other person I've spoken to has found them for less than $2K. One guy had a black 81 that was in better shape then mine for $1100. I started to feel like a bit of a sucker after that.
