this sucks man. I wanted to take my wipers off to derust and prime them. The passenger's side one didn't come off so easy. I used a pry bar and heard it crack. I wasn't even prying that hard. on the plus side, the wiper arms look really good now.

I paid ~$220 with tax.
Call around and tell them you're paying yourself, not going through insurance. They have two prices, one for insurance, one for out of pocket. The bigger shops like Apple autoglass only deal with insurance claims. They do not want your business because they can only make a reasonable amount of money off you, instead of milking an insurance company. I think they quoted me like $600. If you're someone who's considering insurance and you hear $600 then you're going to think that you should go through insurance. If they tell you $200 you'd be nuts to go through insurance because you deductable is higher than that amount and your rates may go up.

Be sure to tell them you are paying. Some shops will come to your house and do the work there. That may be an option if your car isn't registered - it'll save your from driving it. Also, dont be tempted to buy a used windshield or put on in yourself. get a professional to install a new unit - it is worth it. Call lots of places as well, and see what guarantee they all offer.
We had our windshield in our wagon replaced 3 times, because the first two looked like windows out of a cathedral - all wavy and distorted. Finally they put a Volvo OEM part in for us.

i got a crack in my windshield last year on Niagara criuse, and it's been slowly growing ever since. the car is already on the road, so i am just going to leave it until i have $300 lying around or i have to safety it.
but as for advice, what was said so far is good, make sure they don't try to rape you thinking it's insurance...
