In the car business we hear of this all the time. A seller doesnt transfer the ownership or cancel their plates and bad things happen. You should be glad its just parking tickets and whoever has the car didnt have an accident. If the ownership isnt transfered you would be 100% responsible. Moral of the story....When you sell a car GO WITH THE NEW OWNER AND MAKE SURE THE TRANSFER IS DONE! Keep a copy and ALWAYS CANCEL PLATES.

Well it all depends.

He is quoted as stating that his old plates were left IN the car, not ON the car.
In which case, the new owner deliberately took the time to put these plates on the car (or some other car) and proceed to park with abandon wherever he chose.

If thats the case, I side with the original poster.

If he typo'd the original post and the plates were left ON the car, then thats just his dumb mistake. (cuz who knows what the buyer knows about purchasing cars. If the plates were left on, maybe he thought it was correct to use em as is.)

Man, that sucks. But since the plates are still registered in your name, report the car as stolen and recover it.

I'm not the one coming on here and physically threatening people before hearing both sides of the story. This kid who sold his car is just jumping to the conclusion that the guy who bought the car is using his plates. What if they were stolen from the guy who bought the car? Even still, had I have forgotten my plates in a car and I couldn't get in touch with the guy who bought the car, I'm sure I could muster up the intelligence to call the MTO and tell them whats up so that they could cancel the plates and prevent any tickets or 407 bills from going under my name. And if being perfect means that I don't do stupid **** like leaving valid license plates in a car I just sold, then yes, I am perfect. *******.

I second that. Also when ever you sell a car you can go to the MTO and have them change the vehicle status to sold. This way if the new owner does not transfer the plates you are in the clear. I recently sold a 92 pathfinder, the guy drove up in a car with illeagal plates, put them on my trucj and left. I then called my Mom who owns an mto office and had her change the status to sold.

4 years ago I sold a motorcycle, the gent left it in my name and the bike was impounded. I got a letter from the police, well on the last day before it would go to auction I went, paid the charges, got the bike back and sold it for a second time. Dumb ***.

Moral of the story, if it is in your name it is yours. Do a UVIP, if he has not transfered the owner ship, then maybe he is using your plates. Second check were he is gtetting parking tickets and go looking. But you must do some looking before you start pointing fingers. It is possible that he trashed the plates and someone else picked them up.

Thread locked.

You made the mistake, and the buyer also made a bad choice (to use the plates illegally).

Personally, I like Aaron's idea *laughs*, but this definitely isn't the way to handle the situation.
