rew swap questions.

I just read about the motive fab mounts and somewhere I found that u could use the fc trans on the rew and everything should bolt in. I was wondering how true that is. I know most would say that u must fabricate your own but I'm trying to build my fc asap. Would I be able to use a tII trans on the rew?

FC3S Pro: 13B-REW swap into the FC3S

iLLESTFC3S 02-14-12 10:58 PM

Thanks for the link! Very helpful. I may just bolt a 13bt trans to my rew if I could find one and the clutch as well. The only thing that confuses me at this point is why use the stock twins and why use the stock fc oil cooler? I have connections with fabrication. I plan on doing a single gt40r and a single muffler. If I were to do a v mount intercooler setup and relocate the oil cooler will this make an easier swap? If someone could look at their fc engine bay and let me know then I will greatly appreciate it. I have a shell and the rew and rew trans separate right now with no hoist. Another thing is, is it required to use the fc oil pan? Is there a place that sells one that will fit or will I be ok using the stock rew with motive fab mounts? Sorry for asking many questions like a noob but I'm trying to grasp the technicality of this swap by trying to use as many rew parts as possible and not having to tap into any of my irons/housings. also I don't want a fmic. I'm hoping to use a v mount setup to keep my goodies hidden.

Don't use the stock twin turbos. Go with the single turbo set-up that you have in mind.

You can always go with a dual oil cooler set-up since you have a fabrication connection. The FC has a more than sufficient oil cooler, though.

Make an easier swap? A V-mount intercooler set-up, along with relocating the oil cooler, will only require more fabrication. If you mean, "Make it an easier swap on your wallet"... Then no.

The oil pan depends on the way you choose to mount the engine. The Motive mounts have been debated over several times. Mounting the 13B-REW properly will require fabrication.

Read a few of these...

To add my $0.02:

Use the FC oil cooler. Its far more superior to the stock FD sidemount, plus no added fabrication needed.

Also IIRC you cannot use the FC pan on the REW block, as the center iron is not tapped to accept the FC's passenger motor mount, the drivers side should bolt on no issue (i think).

Curiously, why bother with a REW into a FC? Surely you can 'trade' someone the rew block for a 13BT and have something that will bolt right in 100% of the time and require only a quick harness change and ecu swap. Not to mention easily bolting both the turbo FC trans/driveshaft/differential/axles, as the FD parts are not as stout as its FC counterparts (case in point being the S4 turbo rear diff being stronger than the FD diff).

Goodluck man! i've decided not to use the motivefab engine mounts... theres a pretty reputable shop that can make it for me. I'll let you know how it goes from there.

I did the swap......you need to tap the center iron like posted, custom motor mounts like FC brackets allow you to use the Twins. The Aftermarket mounts are alot easier and should be used. The FC T2 tranny is your best bet and will bolt up to the REW. If your planning on using the ECU, it can be done but it's a wiring nightmare (use a standalone). Overall it's very complicated and your better off purchasing a 13BT or Turbo'ing your 6 port.

iLLESTFC3S 02-17-12 04:14 PM

Ah I see. So making my own x member behind the existing one and using the factory fc oil cooler along with all the fc turbo drivetrain would be my best bet. As for tapping the iron for the motor mount, does anyone have a template for the holes or may I find pix and info in some of the links on here? Also using a fmic will be much easier to do? All of this sounds very understandable so far! Too bad about the v mount... Would be nice but yes it is expensive to do and a lot of work. Hmmm getting a 13bt in hawaii is very rare and very expensive to ship if bought elsewhere. Thinking about it, I would gladly trade my rew, trans, wire harness, ecu and 3" RE-A downpipe for an all stock 13bt, trans, harness and driveshaft. I will go with a stand alone so the ecu is pointless for me.

And too disprove all the bullshit about this conversion which is scattered all over the internet!!!

You can NOT adapt the fc engine mounts to the rew block by drilling and tapping the centre plate!!!
drivers side mount YES
https://lh3.ggpht.com/_iwggVbPgxaA/T...7122010061.JPG

Passenger side NO, there is one hole for the mount it will either rotate or bend the mount!!!

https://lh3.ggpht.com/_iwggVbPgxaA/T...7122010057.JPG

The fc sump WILL line up reasonably well to the fd block even with the fd timming cover!!!

The fun really starts now!
Mounts are here slightly different to the ones pictured but they look a little better,
welds are a little better aswell
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_i...3022011101.JPG
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_i...3022011102.JPG

The gap between them and the oil pan is a little more the expected but they will still be loaded ones the engine is in
I also didnt like them red haha soo black it was just a thin coat soo they dont look like dogs balls

Other issues,
Turbo actuators, will struggle to clear the power steering lines, in rhd cars.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_i...2022011140.JPG
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_i...2022011141.JPG

There will be about 30cm gap between the dump pipe and cat,
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-o...-19-56_796.jpg

Bonnet doesnt clear radiator fill point of the fd eaither no pictures to prove thou obviously. this is not an easy thing to do hence why there are soo many failed attempts...

Can you imagine the amount of stress that those mounts put on the subframe and stock mounts? I wouldn't feel comfortable doing any spirited driving in that car.

There are so many better alternatives to mounting this engine.

squeakm 02-19-12 09:05 PM

No they are not the best made mounts,

Can you imagine that the weight is transfered along the axis of the original fc mounts, as the mounts meet the oil pan along that axis.

I would feel more comfortable jumping on the front of this motor with these mounts over the stock fd mounts.

These also have the benefits of fd mounts for minimising torque forces created through the drive train and engine, while the stability and weight loading of the fc mounts.

if i had access to a decent fab shop i'd get them to make a copy of these mounts...

iLLESTFC3S 02-27-12 02:22 AM

thanks a million man. i dont really like how everyone is telling me the same things and i feel very sketchy about drilling and tapping. nice pix btw and great details. it is very hard to find a turboII motor in hawaii as well as any rx7 parts. if i could find someone to trade my rew for a 13bt or turboII 13b i would but i would have to keep an eye out everyday and wait about a year or 2. im not up for that. the shop i work for (FOOLBATTLE) wants to help me do the custom fab and use my car as a rolling ad so it sounds great to go that way. besides all labor will be free to me, just gotta pay materials. thanks a lot again and sorry for not being on a lot due to work and side jobs but i will post pix and add some questions soon when i get the time. really hope to not be a bother to all u helpful ppl.

ill try post some pix of our welds and fab, we normally do 4x4 custom fab and so far we have been on a good streak! we will try to recreate these mounts in the pix andi will lyk how it goes as well as post pix.

Very nice! That design looks very solid. I believe I seen something like that before somewhere... I've been doing soo much research on nearly everything that I can barely remember where to relocate all my info lol. I just got my s4 shell today! I'm soo happy. The guy I got it from finally came back from deployment so now I can say I'm a proud owner! Most of the time I spent with the car today was used on observing the engine bay and all the lines, harness, etc. I'm thinking of using a 13bt trans on my rew because I heard that the rew trans pushes the shifter about 2" back. I'm also contemplating on making my own aluminum oil pan. I'm really diggin the mount variations u guys posted up as well. Using those gussets to reinforce the corners look promising as well. The one piece design looks forgiving toward any torque/ power issues! Overall looks simple! Thanks again! I just gotta post some pix soon. Aloha

iLLESTFC3S 03-04-12 05:33 AM

Btw I found that its an 86 and not 87 lol owner didn't get the year right so I gotta fix my signature. Also will the stock NA rear end hold up? Or what do I have to change to make it work with a 13bt trans? What driveshaft do I use?

dannng 03-04-12 10:57 AM

In order to use your t2 transmission you have to use a t2 drive shaft. and pretty from there you get a t2 lsd and axles.

iLLESTFC3S 03-06-12 05:04 PM

ok is this an easy swap? lsd, axles and driveshaft? does it bolt straight into the na rear? if so then im in luck there. its less rare parts for me to find. im planning on doing a 5lug conversion too. ive heard that the na rear wont handle the rew so im just a little upset... really wanted to keep the 4lug and find some hayashi wheels or mkII's for the oldschool look. but the 5 lug isnt soo bad. im gonna do the 5 spoke 350z wheels (not the tracks, tracks are 18 front 19 rear) they are 18x8 +30 front and 18x8.5 +33 rear. im hoping to do a full tII conversion and slam (dump or drop, slam is a very popular term in hawaii for a big drop 3" or more) the car to tuck the lip of the rims. overall im pushing for an extreme yet clean look. im flaring the fenders as i type this. gonna set up a photobucket as soon as i get time.

Yeah the rear bolts up. Just make sure you have someone helping you cause if not you'll be bench pressing the diff and thats no fun. I actually have the stock 350z rims on my rear... IMO i dont really like them . If you lived closer i'd give your the rims.
