The quest for 300HP with a small budget
 
So as my 90 turbo sits in the garage this winter ive been thinking about more power.
as of now i only have a few things done to it

Ported waste gate/ rebuilt stock s5 turbo
RB 3" downpipe into a dual borla exhaust
still using stock intercooler
custom charge pipe with tial bov
aem eugo wide band
turbo smart Eboost2 boost controller

im still in the early stages of planning but here is what i think will get me close to 300

Rtek 1.8
750cc injectors
hybrid turbo
aem afc
aftermarket intercooler

An intercooler is not absolutely necessary for 300 hp. The stock tmic will get you there. Check out the budget hybrid ebay turbo thread, then look at diyautotune.com and check out their install writeup for the fc. Better bang for your buck than an rtek.

well i have a fmic kit sitting in storage, so i might as well. but i'll be setting it up as a v-mount for less turbo lag then a fmic.

I have skimmed over that ebay hybrid thread, and it seemed that they buy a whole tubo and just use the compressor wheel and housing on the stock turbo? i was thinking of saving money and just getting a compressor wheel and getting the stock housing machined, but im stumped on how to machine it.

megesquirt might be the best bang for my buck, but for $180 for an Rtech chipped ecu that can support 15 psi and 300hp is a good low cost stepping stone

Believe what you want, but I recommend actually talking to someone who has used an rtek. Junito, I know you have, but many have found the severe limitations of the rtek just aggravating. You'll have full control over everything if you get a full standalone ecu, and you really can't get more low buck than a megasquirt. Less than $500 and you get brand new everything, much better than trying to tune a chipped 20+ year old ecu with a palm pilot with 20+ year old sensors (to still include the AFM) :icon_tdow:

The Rtek 1.8 with a hybrid turbo should get you to around 300whp. Just be carefull with the topmount during hot weather and swap your plugs to bur9eq all around.

im in the same boat with mine, i figure a hybrid turbo at around 12psi should be in the ballpark....

the lag with FMIC vs V mount is almost unnoticeable, you have to do something drastic to even be able to measure it, let alone feel it.

buying a compressor wheel and having the housing machined is totally valid, machining the compressor housing is something that almost every turbo shop can do, actually any one with a lathe could do it, its simple. there is a limitation because at some point the stock housing gets paper thin, but it is nice because its stock, and all the stock stuff still fits. plan B might be to just buy the compressor housing. we used to do it all the time. either the H or V trim wheels are a good fit.

you should also price it out with a BNR, it may be that the BNR is the same money as machining + balancing + wheel.

people really like the megasquirt, but @12psi the Rtek should work too, the difference being that the Rtek has its limits, like the stock ecu, but the MS requires rewiring and tuning, which take longer, add cost...

with my car i haven't decided on the IC or the turbo yet. the initial plan was to use a stock S4 turbo, add EGT and a pressure gauge in the manifold, and then try an H trim compressor, V trim compressor, and then an O trim turbine in the S4 housing, although we'll see what i have time to do
