Engine is not getting fuel but ran for a second on starting fluid. I now know it will run and am happy about that. Fixed a grounding issue and a small oil leak so far. I need to check the fuel pump tonight and make sure its operating properly. And then its off to check the injector signal and go from there. Super excited that I'm this close!

Wedge the AFM open to see if it's a relay problem. I'm sure you knew that though.

I jumped the yellow fuel lump test connector by the boost sensor and turned the key to the on position to test the fuel pump and o didn't hear the pump run at all. I want to remove pump and apply 12v to it to see if it will run. The issue is that the FSM does not specify which of the wires is power, ground, and sender. Something to research.

I decided to pull the fuel pump last night to bench test it and see if maybe it was sticking. When I pulled the pump and looked in the tank, I was horrified! I think the car was sitting much longer than the previous owner had thought. He said it wasn't running well when he had it running and I can see why. The decision was made right then and there to drop the fuel tank and send it in to a local radiator shop to have it boiled and resealed. The plan is to get the tank there as soon as possible. Will post more pictures of that process. For now though:

My garage smells horrible right now. I have the tank covered but the smell is still pretty putrid. I'm actually glad that the fuel pump gave up the ghost, otherwise I may have tried to add some gas.

I called a local reputable radiator shop yesterday and advised them of what I had and asked them if they would clean and reseal the tank. They were happy to do so for only $150. I plan on bringing the tank to them the next chance I get. The bad thing is that I don't have a day off work until next Saturday, so I may have to work something out.

I was able to get the fuel pump working again after hot tanking the entire fuel pump setup and sending unit. I cleaned the pump's internals by running it powered directly to 12V and letting it suck up some BG throttle body and intake cleaner. Works like a dream. With that said, since I have access to this wonderful hot tank and some pretty good cleaning solvents, I've decided to attempt to clean the tank myself before giving in and paying. I've soaked it internally with mineral spirits and flushed it. I now have it sitting in the hot tank and I will start the cleaning portion of it today when I get to work. I'll updated tonight with pictures of the tank and how it turns out.

I was able to get the tank cleaning finished up yesterday. Considering how filthy and contaminated it was, I think it came out well. I spent hours working on it but the best part is that it didn't cost me anything but time. I have to order a new pickup seal and pump screen, but I can install the tank and have it ready to go before those come in. Took a few pics to share because what is a restoration without pics?

Got the tank installed the other night. Waiting on a new fuel pump screen and a washer from Mazda to reassemble the pump and install it. Will add more pictures of that part when the parts arrive.

Got the engine started last night for the first time. It ran super well with no leaks. Today I will bleed the coolant and allow it to run even longer and take pictures and post them. I was surprised at how quickly the engine started and how well the engine ran. I definitely need an exhaust system asap. A stock exhaust would be fine for now. A full Racing Beat exhaust would be great down the road.

As promised, pictures of the engine running! Had to remove the upper radiator hose for replacement, but a new one will be here today and I will be back in business

I've got a little seepage at the water pump, so the next step is to pull it and re-seal it. I'm glad I found it now, before I was driving it. Would have made a larger mess in many regards.

Pulled the water pump yesterday and replaced the gasket and while I was at it, I replaced the oil metering pump rod with a new one from Mazda. The rod was a little tweaked, causing the throttle to stick a little. Ran the engine to normal operating temp and it did just fine. I was able to bleed the power steering while I was at it and the engine appears to be leak free currently. I really need an exhaust system for the car so that's the next big thing on my to do list. I only have the first converter and that's it. I won't do more than idle it without an exhaust. Took some pics to share:

Not a ton has changed since my last post. I still need an exhaust system and I've discovered an oil leak near the turbo that's causing oil to drip onto the turbo when under load. At idle it doesn't seem to be an issue, but if I run the car up the road and back, there's a lot of oil smoke from oil on the turbo. This will be the next thing that I track down as I do not want to have the car burn to the ground. I did wash it yesterday even tough the paint is wrong and crap. Figured it deserved a much needed bath since I was washing a few of the other cars and I wanted to share a couple updated pictures of the car.

I was able to locate an exhaust system yesterday and when that arrives, it will really help push this car forward! I'm excited to continue its restoration and to share more pictures!!

The car has been awaiting the exhaust before we move forward as I am in the middle of so many projects currently. But I had the car out and took some pictures to share. The car is still running pretty well.

Replaced the rear calipers and serviced the rear brakes and did a complete brake flush. I also installed the front wheel well liners that were missing. Felt good to make some progress on the car!

Finally got the car back in the garage to start working on the car a bit more. Looks like I'm going to have to re-solder the common components that fail. The first thing will be a disassembly and cleaning of the master window switch. The windows just stopped working. Time to start with cleaning the contacts on the switches. Took a pic of my two 10AE's in the garage last night to share:

Well I removed the master switch and disassembled it and found that the contacts were literally black. I gently cleaned the contacts and used Deoxit cleaner to remove any carbon and dirt. I assembled the switch and used tiny bits of dielectric grease on the contacts and now both windows work as they should. Next will be the passenger side window switch, just as a preventative measure.

Most of the exhaust showed up yesterday and I couldn't be happier!! The exhaust is in great shape for the age and the best part is that it's an original TII exhaust!! Waiting on the main cat and in the mean time I have to order all new gaskets and some new rubber muffler hangers. Appear mine were cut when the exhaust was removed.

Spent some time today and got the muffler and Y-pipe flanges cleaned up, polished the muffler's tips and installed the mufflers and y-pipe. The fitment is very good and I'm more than happy with it. Still missing the main cat and the pipe from the main cat to the pre cat/downpipe but I am already on top of getting those. Took some pictures to share:
