I'm still pretty green here, but going to post up my build. :)
This is my new project to replace my MR2. Rust free and low KM. Previous owner blew it up, so the engine was already out. He dyno'd his setup at 290HP. So here's an up to date update,
I ended up buying an assembled keg from someone here, rebuilt with a Large Street Port. SO, that's in the mail, and I'm going to store away my current engine parts. Hoping to be running soon! |
aven't updated this thread in forever! Lot's has happened. The car is currently running and driving, just waiting on parts for my new rad fan set-up so it will stop running too hot.
Here's what I've been doing the last few months: This is the manifold I bought from the car I picked up in Muskoka. Made it work with my wastegate, and straightened all of the gasket surfaces. https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...g/P1010189.jpg Welded the V-Band for my wastegate https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...g/P1010191.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...g/P5240277.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...g/P5240292.jpg CNC Sexy Logo https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...g/P5240266.jpg https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...g/P5240269.jpg Bent https://i294.photobucket.com/albums/...g/P5240275.jpg |

No fair!! You're a machinist. The rest of us can't do half of this!
Build looks FIERCE. However, I think the older wheels are nicer. Continue! |
Haha thanks man! I've had a lot of fun building parts, that's for sure!
I liked the old wheels too, but they were too far gone with corrosion :( But, I'm getting married this November, so next year I should be able to buy something I like more. |
dang kid, i don't even know how many custom parts i would have made if i had your skills/access to equipment.. looks absolutely awesome.
-sean |
good work :icon_tup:
|
Looks awesome, and I can only dream of what I would do with those tools/skills. One question though, with the attention to detail to everything else, why leave that UIM looking like rubbish? I wouldn't have taken long to clean and spray it and it would have made the bay look like you put the time into it that you obviously did.
|
Thanks a lot, lots of cool parts to come!

I've learned from building my last car that making things shiny too early is stressful, and usually ends up getting done again.. I do appreciate your keen eye! Built an extended slave cylinder rod, my clutch is isn't releasing all the way and I need this as a band-aid for now. Stainless of course :) http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...g/IMG_1993.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...g/IMG_1998.jpg Buffed the car, no beauty shots until I figure out my rim situation. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...g/IMG_1985.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...g/IMG_1990.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...g/IMG_1991.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...g/IMG_1988.jpg Cleaned the interior finally.. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...g/IMG_1974.jpg |
Keep up the good work! Love the wastegate integration.

is there a reason why you cut a square for your piping rather than just using a circle bit?

That's exactly how I did mine too. Angle grinder, nasty cuts, primed & painted to prevent rust, covered up with bits of split hose. I get what he's saying though. The whole rest of the car was done so beautifully with all that precision machine work, tig welding, etc. Then you see these holes cut out like that. I guess everyone was expecting you to take the chassis to a waterjet to have them CNC cut or something
Very nice work. I wish I had access to all that stuff. I'm forced make do with a flux core welder and a drill press! |

All that really needs to be done to clean it up is to use a better material to outline the holes. Hose was what I had available at the time. I'll be thinking about what I can do. Got a fan in today! |
that Radiator fan will not work out right. you will have overheating problems. trust.

That one looks like a 16" Volvo fan, which would actually work fine if remounted on it's shroud. |
I have an escort fan ready to go in, It's similar to the Taurus fan.
Couldn't find a Taurus fan with decent shipping to Canada |
There were no Taurus fans at the autowreckers?
|
Nothing local at all.. The only one in the yard here was missing the fan and rad.

Got my front tires switched out for something that will fit better

Well, lots has been going on and i'm back to working on my car again. Not much excitement yet, but there's lots of parts on the way. Having my own garage now helps a ton. Last years part of this build was done in the driveway and it was terrible.

This was the culprit for my engine damage. The cat had clogged, and in the middle of a 2nd gear pull this blew out the tailpipe, spiking boost pressure over 20psi. Cracked a seal, leaving my house later that day it tossed a seal. Live and learn I guess.
Attachment 683723 |
Still running the hybrid? Was planning on making one with a stock s5 and 60-1 cold side. How do you like the response? How's the boost creep?
|
I actually just sold my Hybrid, and bought a Garrett GT4082. My power goals were just a bit higher than the hybrid would make. As for the turbo, I loved it! It spooled fast and was reliable because it was plumbed stock. The only thing I would make sure to do is port the wastegate or run an external unit. The higher flow will make the wastegate bottleneck much more evident.
I recommend 60-1 /S5 hybrids to anyone wanting 300-350 hp. |
Sweet tool box! Cool project to, thats quite the sight seeing that come out of your exhaust haha
|
Thanks a lot man!
It came out with a huge "diesel like" cloud of black, I was quite shocked lol. I immediately turned around and picked it up. After it had a really rough start (Cracked seal), I checked my data logs of that afternoon, and realized it had spiked. |
clean build. definetly loving the color and everything bout it. sorry to hear bout the motor. but hopefully she comes back strong good luck
|
Thanks, much appreciated. I'm having a blast building the new engine, and I only killed a rotor and housing, so I got off pretty easy. Can't wait to be back out!
