Well we didn't have a lot of time to work on the car today but we got a little bit of work done.

I sourced another fuel pump assembly that wasn't so rusty. We put a new rubber line on it and a new pre-filter screen/filter thing.

We haven't pulled the tank yet, so we have the fuel pump assembly sitting in the trunk. We attempted to jump the fuel pump and it DID NOT turn on. I thought for a second that maybe the wires to the pump were jacked up somehow.

I went to crank the car and low and behold, the fuel pump turned on. Good. So now we know our pump is working when plugged into the car. Tomorrow the plan is to drop the old tank and swap in the fresh tank.

6 days into 2012, and 6 days working on the RX-7!!!
Its def a new year for me.

***Update***

So far this year, I've worked on the car a total of 8 days...we missed a couple of days mostly because of the weather (RX-7 is outside in the drive). Thats about 73%. Hopefully that number stays high.

We installed the better fuel tank a couple days ago, and got all the hoses and wires connected. We cranked it a couple of times and it still didn't start.

Side note: The coupe tank is smaller than the vert tank. We learned this the hard way. Later we will find a good vert tank to swap in.

Fast forward to today and we finally went out and attempted to verify fuel at the fuel lines in the engine bay. Well no dice. There is no fuel at the fuel lines during cranking. I suspect the engine bay fuel filter is clogged or there is a clog in the line somewhere.

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a new fuel filter and cleanout the fuel line.

IIRC the fuel pump wont get any power unless the AFM is reading airflow. This is so that if the car crashes and the engine stops (hence no airflow) the fuel pump shuts off and thereby doesnt pump fuel into a post-crash fire.

The best way to test the fuel pump is to jumper the test connector near the air filter. You can disconnect the return line in the engine bay and see if fuel is flowing. Your local parts store may rent a fuel pressure test kit.

Btw, is one of your engines JDM? I ask because the lines (at least on the T2) are reversed and have caused folks endless heartache.

Thanks for the tips vrracing. Its a usdm engine.

GOOD NEWS!!!

We got the car running and idleing on its own again!!!

Its embarrassing to admit, but the other day when I verified fuel in the engine bay, I was checking the return line. Lmao...way to go. So we verified fuel on the correct line. We picked up a new fuel filter and installed it. I figured I might as well get some new plugs while we are at the autoparts. We also installed those. The plugs that came out were fouled anyway.

While filling the tank up with about 5 gals of fuel, we noticed a couple of yellow plugs on the emmisions harness that we had not plugged in yet. These are the two big yellow plugs near the passenger side kick panel, under the dash. Yes I know, how embarrassing to forget to plug those in.

Well we cranked it and it popped really loud a couple times. I never touched the timing on the crank angle sensor but it seemed off...we moved it over and it cranked up and after warming up, was idling on its own.

Tomorrow, I'm going to get off of work early and set the timing. After that, I'll cleanup the cabin and get the carpet ready to install.

In the last couple of days we've;

-pulled the black carpet and black dash out of the parts car
-buffed the rusty parts of the interior
-sprayed the rusted areas inside and out with Rust-oleum Stops Rust spray.

I didn't mention it before, but my parts car is lacking the stock black leather seats. I have blue vert seats but they are reupholstered in a drab blue cloth. Well, my GF surprised me with a couple really nice gifts yesterday for our anniversary. She found some really nice black leather vert seats on craigslist. We picked them up yesterday and they are awesome. Also she got me a really cool RX-7 shirt, with a custom embroidered 10thAE logo (I have 2 10th AE's also, one is a drag car).

After I get out of work today, I'm going to vacuum the carpet, install it, and hopefully the dash also.

If we work on the car today, it will be the 11th day out of 15 this year we work on the car. Still a little better than 73% of the new year.

Interior

The passenger glass window has been out for a couple of weeks now. I was working on replacing the regulator but that little project got put on hold since we were trying to get the car running. Now that the car is running, and theres some rain headed our way, we figured its a good time to put the window and regulator back in.
The parts car has a good regulator but the upper wire-guide was broken (see photo). It was an easy fix swapping in the other.

The carpet/dash/seats are still not in.

We also had some extra Rust-oleum Stops Rust paint so we went ahead and covered most of the cabin floor with it.

In other news, if you recall, I need to still bleed the brake system, get new lugnuts, and two new tires for the rear.

Hopefully the weather isn't too bad today and I can get a little work done.

Interior

Last night's work session was cut short by the rain. We were able to snake the passenger door harness in and buttoned it up, and get the window inplace. The metal ecu cover was also cleaned and installed. Also we were able to vacuum the carpet and get it in.

Today, I brought my gauge cluster to work to set the milage back to 000000 miles. I like this since I can better track my mileage and milestones on my car.

The black dash almost got put in last night but for some strange reason, the blue plugs behind the dash dont match up between the 89 chassis and the 90 black dash. Were going to have to figure that out later today. Maybe swap all the wires behind the dash.

Couple of pics.

So far, I've worked on the car 17 out of 21 days. ~81%

Well we tried our best, but that black dash from the 90 Vert parts car just will not go in. The metal plate under the steering wheel was stopping it. We decided to put the wiring harness back on the bluw (original) dash and just paint the dash. We did a test fit and the blue dash works fine. Its still installed and blue but maybe if the weather allows, we will paint it today after work.

Ive been a little under the weather lately, so I didnt get too much done over the weekend. I managed to pop one of the old dry rotted tires that was on the car. We had some trouble getting a lock lugnut out but it eventually came out. If you recall, I had a set of Kuhmo's that were given to me free with the purchase of my 2nd 10thAE. I got those put on (balanced, new valve stems) my nicer pair of TII rims and installed them. They are 225 45 R16's.

The kids across the street have been taunting me lately. The have a mid 14 second Honda Del-Sol. Next week is quarterly bonus time at work so I'm going to buy a few more things to get this RX back on the road:

Inspection
Registration
Rear tires (maybe 235's or 245's)
Exhaust built (right now its just RB headers. I want RB headers, straight pipe to a Y, then RB mufflers, basically RB exhaust without pre-silencer)

Once I can get this thing "done", I can start focusing on my 10th AE Drag Car....those HoNdA BoY'z wont be able to keep up with that...lol.

@vrracing, are you sure the fuel pump wont be activated without an AFM? Because I cranked my engine without an AFM even plugged into the harness and I got fuel through the lines and I know this because I was changing the fuel filter and wanted to be sure my lines werent clogged.

As the electrical god Hailers said in this thread...

The pump only runs if the key is held to START or if the engine actually starts and runs and you let the key return to ON.
You can look at B-3 "Fuel Control System" of the 91 Wiring Diagram and see the ECU is involved.

I remember seeing that the ECU read the AFM signal to detect if the engine was running and that if you press the AFM flap with the key set to On the pump would run. But it was a long time since we had to mess with any of that hence my "IIRC" qualifier.

Weird I wonder why I got fuel then because I dont have an AFM. Maybe its possible that when the AFM is unplugged the ECU reads that there is air flowing somehow.

I should call this a lack-of-update update.

Well the combination of bad weather, me being feverish for a week, and more bad weather has really put a damper on my progress.

Relevent things that have happened lately:

*I got the windows tinted. Looks great. Photos soon.
*I managed to finally put the last coat of satin black paint on the dash and various interior pieces...wow its like I have a brand new interior!! Love it!!

I'm going to be prudent with my bonus money and pay off some old tickets and surcharges. I really would like to get my license back.

Other than that, stay tuned for some photo's one day...some day...who knows...

Today its raining again in Houston. If it looks better once I get off of work, I will put the dash in. If I work on it today, that will be 21 out of 31 days this year I have worked on the RX-7. Back down to 68%.

Here are some carwash photos from tonight highlighting the new tint. I've been driving the car around the neighborhood after work. I plan on taking it to work tomorrow.

Also finally purchased new lugs. Need to replace all the wheel studs though since these are rusted and a couple have broken off.
Some photos of the interior soon.

looking nice! I've got a 89 vert with the same problem: S4 engine installed by PO. The kid also tried to shave it, and left lumps and rust spots on the trunk... Keep it up! It's good to see someone so close to being finished!
