1987 FC3S GXL Turbo Swap Build Thread
2 Attachment(s)
Starting a new thread due to errors in my original thread. I will begin moving the content now because I have made a lot of progress which I need to update on here.
So I started off with an intro in the Canadian forum but I want am going to have future posts in here for my build thread. Previous link is below: New project 1987 RX7 GXL - RX7Club.com As a quick sum up I purchased this car in October in order to learn how to do an engine swap to the turbo 13b. After a few months of research I decided to stick with the 13b but was very tempted to do the 13b-rew swap. After pricing it out and since I'm trying to get an engine in and running ASAP I stuck with the 13b to avoid excess complications. The car has 82,000 kms and is an 87 GXL. Body is in good shape, appears to have been repainted. Seems to be in sound running condition though that is sortof irrelevant as I'm pulling the engine anyways. One strut is leaking which ill replace soon with coils and there seems to be some bondo repair on the frame rails. There is a small rust hole in the frame that I gotta take a look at again when I get it back. I stored the car for the winter in November to keep in as good condition as possible while I worked on tracking down some parts. Muffler seems to be new and car is currently very quiet. Interior is clean. As far as experience leading up to this project goes, the furthest I've done is suspension work and body painting. I have a decent wiring background and a strong mechanical interest. I've studied automotive engineering and taken apart an engine and tranny in school to check for component wear but that was as a class. Always loved the fc and am excited to this car home and get to work! Just need the weather to participate with me. So far my guides have been this forum, rotaryresurrection and fc3spro. I have to update a couple of items to cover the last few months so the dates will be a bit off.
The shifter was wobbly as hell when I got the car so I changed that quick before storing. Inside there were no bushings left as expected. Attachment 530729 For Christmas got a Haynes manual, new mats, and new wipers. Battery is new as of 2013 so don't need that but the battery box is missing and battery is basically floating around in the engine bay. I'll work on that later. Also did a coolant flush before storing because who knew how long its been. I was excited that the car has an LSD but that ended up not being advantageous as I originally thought as I need to pull the whole drivetrain including diff halfshafts and driveshaft for the swap anyway. For storage pulled the battery and bought a car cover though its stored in a garage. Cleaned inside and out beforehand. When I got the car the stereo was hanging out of the dash (one of the powered motor flip face ones) but a simple fuse was the solution. Wiper light idiot light is on though all the other lights dont seem to be responding. I pulled the cluster and tested it all the lights work must be the CPU or solder connections. That can be dealt with later. Also, in terms of the wiper light I was surprised when the car had three wiper fluid reservoirs haha not something I'm used to with my prelude. I filled the one in the trunk, the one for the front windshield and then the headlight washer reservoir. But then I noticed it was puddling under the car and I looked like an idiot because the headlight one has a leak so no wonder the light is on. |

Attachment 530731 Started my new Job in January upon graduation and started to save money for parts. After a couple months researching I Finally got my engine last week had to pick up an engine hoist that day in order to unload the engine upon delivery. It an s5 rebuilt block with s4 external parts. 332 usdm ecu. Also got turbo tranny, driveshaft , and diff but I'm having a lot of trouble finding turbo halfshafts. Anyone let me know if you know where I can find some. Will post engine pics soon. Looks to be in good condition very excited hoping the weather will clear up so I can get my car back to my house from its storage. Need to save up a bit more money before I can purchase coilovers. |

The problem with getting the car out of storage is that its in a garage behind a house and I'd have to drive the car along the lawn about thirty feet to get it out but the lawn is covered in about two feet of frozen snow. So although the roads here are for the most part clear I think I'd struggle even getting the garage door to swing out and up.
Attachment 530732 Attachment 530733 Engine photos: Attachment 530734 Attachment 530736 Still need to get the half shafts, turbo hood, new thermostat, turbo fuel pump, exhaust or custom exhaust piping kit/muffler. And then the basics, spark plugs, wires, fluids, probably should replace the brake and clutch master cylinders.. Engine mount bushings.. coilovers.. |
I need to fix my photos so that they display properly because I'm posting this on my phone but if you open them in a new tab you can view them in full. I'll fix it on my comp soon sorry
|
I'm trying really hard to stay away from any visual work on the car and focus only on getting the engine in and running for now (regardless of how badly I'd like some s5 tail lights). Engine upgrades can come later I barely have enough money to get the engine in as it is haha. In and running with new suspension is the short term goal.
|
Emissions removed and block off plates already applied to the engine. I'm going to need to transfer a couple of parts from my current engine that are missing but most components already included.
Things like thermostat, speed sensor, reverse light/ neutral sensor, potentially alternator depending on the condition of mine cant remember all need to be swapped Need to buy new mounts, spark wires, drop in k&n filter, master brake and clutch cylinder can't remember if I mentioned them before. Still need halfshafts that's still an issue and good. Don't think I have the funds to switch to fmic for now. Not sure if I'm Gona go full custom exhaust and like an apexi n1 muffler or pick up an eBay exhaust just to get the car running. I know itd have to be replaced pretty quickly and it'd probably sound like crap but I won't even be able to start the engine until I have some sort of down pipe on there. Just thoughts for now. |
Hopefully going to be bringing the car home from storage on Wednesday so I can get to work. Can't wait!

Went yesterday to go bring the rx7 out of storage. The car started right away which was a nice surprise. Isn't too much of a benefit though since I'm pulling that whole drivetrain anyway. There was quite a bit more snow left than expected! It was about 1.5-2 feet of frozen snow the whole way.
Attachment 530740 Attachment 530741 Attachment 530742 Decided to go around the back of the house and into the driveway since the path was already there it just had to be widened. |

Attachment 530743
That ended up being extremely hectic. Got into a situation where the I had about a 4 inch gap, the back left wheel was on a chunk of ice and the front was stuck in mud. Suddenly the car fell off the ice block and slid into the deck. Attachment 530744 Attachment 530746 LUCKILY there was no damage. Eventually finally got it pushed around the tight turn. Finally got the car free after some pushing from my dad and a neighbor as well as shoving some plywood and carpets under the tires. Attachment 530747 Brought it home to my house, I forgot how wobbly the suspension is! Definitely need a new suspension setup ASAP. Anyways it's good to finally have it available to work on, hopefully I can find some time to get started. |
Okay that marks the end of the thread moving and where I left off. Now I can begin updating what I've done in the last three weeks. I've been using a GoPro to document all my work so I will be uploading lots of progress pictures from there

DAY 1
First day consisted mostly of getting the garage setup as usually our cars are parked in there so I had to get all my tools up from the basement and get a good workspace going Attachment 530754 I got to work removing the hood which kinda sucked on my own but I didn't want to ask for help on the first step! Attachment 530755 Attachment 530756 Next I went to the trunk and removed the liner around the fuel pump to the fuel pump connector. I ran the car and then disconnected the fuel pump and let it go until it stalled to remove the fuel line pressure. Then I removed the battery and assembled the trunk liner back together so that it wouldn't get all folded and creased. Attachment 530757 Attachment 530758 |

DAY 2
I removed the airbox, air pump hose, and air duct for intake. Had to vacuum up some leaves and debris from the engine bay around that area. Attachment 530759 When I opened up the air intake filter I was surprised that it was FULL of leaves!! It literally burst open with debris when I pried it apart. It's a good thing I'm getting a new air filter as it was probably struggling for air Attachment 530760 |

DAY 3
I began removing the fan then the shroud Attachment 530761 Attachment 530762 Next I drained the coolant and disconnected the radiator hoses, radiator fan switch (which broke), and heater hose. Attachment 530763 Attachment 530764 Then I removed the radiator Attachment 530765 And removed the cruise control, sub zero fluid, and put the charcoal canister aside Attachment 530766 picture I just found of the debris in the intake LOL Attachment 530767 I disconnected some sensors on the passenger side of the vehicle and labelled them up but realized later that these don't need to be detached since the harness will stay connected when the engine is removed anyway. Attempted to pull back the passenger carpet to get to the ecu but had a hard time trying not to ruin the interior trim or carpet so I eventually gave up for the evening. Attachment 530768 |

DAY 5?
Somewhere in my photo organization i got confused and labelled this as day 5 but I think it was the second half of another day. My buddy came by and we went to work releasing the tensioned and removing the belts. Attachment 530769 We also attempted to remove the power steering but I guess we were both so tired that we never figured out where the bolts were. Could have been the lighting too, not sure. (I later realized they are behind the pulley, but that's another day) |

My girlfriend gave me an impact socket set, ngk spark plugs and a walbro 255lph fuel pump for my birthday which was sick!
Attachment 530770 I also picked up some s5 tails! Attachment 530771 But then as I was maneouvering them in my car so that they wouldn't sit face down, the edge of one caught on the under dash of my prelude and cracked the corner! : ( Attachment 530772 So shitty. Anyways I superglued it back and wiped the excess with a razor blade. It's fixed but I'm still sad that i broke perfectly good tails after wanting them for so long |

DAY5 REAL
I figured out that the pulley on the power steering had to be removed in order to access the bolts behind it. However as I didn't have an impact gun I shoved a screwdriver through the pulley to prevent it from spinning and torqued the bolt with a breaker bar. This unfortunately bent the pulley a bit but I think it's minor enough. Attachment 530775 Disconnected the connectors and drained the fluid and removed the power steering. Also disconnected the ac compressor bolts but just let it hang there for now. |

DAY 6
Attachment 530777 Disconnected the connectors from the drivers side, brake vacuum hose, heater return hose, oil pump connections and so on. My friend dropped by to borrow a tool and helped out to remove the fuel lines. Previously I had thought that I had drained all of the coolant but when I unplugged the heater hose I was unprepared for how much coolant came out. Attachment 530778 I decided to give the ecu another try and managed to get it exposed enough to remove the kick panel covering it and disconnect the engine harness. Attachment 530779 Attachment 530780 My friend came back after his dinner and he helped to guide the engine harness out of the car from the inside while I maneuvered it from the bay side. We then went to work disconnecting the exhaust and decided to try between the pre cat 2 and the cat. Without an impact gun this proved to be very difficult. The problem is I have an impact tool set but my compressor is just a pancake one and cannot run it. A 60 or 80L compressor is in my plans for the future but right now is not in my budget. In order to do this, my buddy laid under the passengers side of the car and guided the socket, while I laid under the other side of the car and cranked the breaker bar. This took about 25 minutes on the worn out bolts it was terrible. Attachment 530781 |

DAY 7
Went to work removing the full exhaust starting from the first pre cat. Attempted to get it off all in one go by undoing all of the exhaust hangers. Attachment 530791 Attachment 530792 Attachment 530793 Attachment 530794 Attachment 530795 That turned out to be fairly tricky and I ended up cutting one Exhaust hanger and removing one muffler in order to get the system off. Attachment 530797 Next I went at removing the heat shielding above the exhaust so that I could get to the driveshaft Attachment 530796 Majority of the heat shield bolts were very rusty and I ended up having to cut two of them off. I will have to deal with reattach ment later. Attachment 530798 Then I drained the tranny fluid Attachment 530799 Later that evening another friend came over and brought a plug in impact gun with him which was great. With that we were able to remove the driveshaft and the remaining pre cat in 5 minutes. This is comparable with the 30 minutes my other friend and I spent cranking an exhaust bolt with the breaker bar. Attachment 530800 Attachment 530802 Attachment 530801 Lastly we removed the clutch slave cylinder from the top of the tranny. The only thing left for the next day was to remove the tranny sensors and then start pulling the engine! Attachment 530809 |

DAY 8
Removed the remaining sensor connections on the tranny and it was finally time to pull the engine. It was time to roll the car out of the garage so that we could get the engine hoist in front of it on the flat garage floor Attachment 531028 Got the engine hoist Hooked up with a chain to the two engine mounts. Attachment 531029 Disconnected the transmission mounting bolts while keeping a jack and stands below it to keep it from suddenly dropping. Attachment 531030 After that took off the engine mounting bolts and tried to raise up the engine but it was super difficult to maneuver. I should have taken the bumper off the front of the car because the lift kept pulling into the car since the engine was at a further distance than the farthest reach of the arm. Eventually I went under the car and pulled down on the transmission so that the shifter area would clear the inside of the car. From there it was pretty much all good. Attachment 531031 Attachment 531032 First time engine pulling went pretty well! |

Engine Bay Degreasing
Now that the engine was out I wanted to clean up all of that grease coating all over the engine bay. I used some Super Clean cleaner and degreaser, a pressure washer, and a wire brush. Attachment 531033 Before picture Attachment 531034 After picture Attachment 531035 All ready for the new engine Attachment 531036 Also, I got some more parts in. The radiator fan switch which I broke, DTSS eliminator bushings, and a k&n drop in filter from my sister for my birthday. Attachment 531037 |

Got some more parts in: brake master cylinder, clutch master cylinder, and clutch slave cylinder. Today I swapped a couple items from the old engine to the new. Moved over the ps/ac mounting bracket, the thermostat, and then when I went to swap alternators I accidentally ripped the wiring so I need to resolder that. I also discovered that the wires for my reverse light/5th gear switch are all ripped out so I need to replace that. Having trouble finding one, anyone know of a place I can get one shipped? Thanks in advance |

Swapped out the brake master cylinder, clutch master cylinder and clutch slave cylinder with the new parts I ordered. I'll admit it wasn't very easy getting at those hard to reach bolts. I still need to bleed all the brake lines.
Before Attachment 531439 After Attachment 531442 This is good because all the old fluids were all black and I was having trouble getting the clutch to disengage when the old engine was in. Parts still needed: turbo reverse / fifth gear switch and turbo half shafts. Anyone who has and is selling let me know please. |

Finally got the engine in place today. It took way longer than I expected. I started off with the front of the vehicle jacked up because I thought that was the easiest way but with the short reach of the lift couldn't get the engine into its mounts. Ended off with the front on the ground and the back jacked 3 feet in the air. So good to finally have that in now I can slowly hook everything back up.
Attachment 531645 Attachment 531646 Attachment 531647 |
Maybe I glanced over it, but where did you source the engine from? importer?
|
Nope I don't think I mentioned it. I bought it locally on Kijiji it's a USDM engine

I've been slowly hooking some things up and transferring parts over from the NA engine such as pulleys for power steering and ac. I'll update those parts soon once I upload from my GoPro. Just a quick update here, my BC Coilovers came in and I'm super excited to install them when I get a chance!

Day 12
Well it's probably not day 12 on here but that's how it's sorted in my GoPro album. On day 12 I took on the annoying task of popping in my engine mount bushings after the engine was already in place. Once I lifted the engine out with the jack under the oil pan I had an extremely difficult time getting the two bolts to sit back in the right spot. Since the bushings don't fit snug with the engine mounts we chose to ignore them when putting in the engine because it seemed simple to put in later. With two people it may have been okay but on my own I struggled pushing the engine over while lowering the jack. I eventually had to get our my hoist and lift the engine up completely so that I could guide it more easily into place. Attachment 535495 Attachment 535496 After that I installed my new reverse gear/fifth gear sensor into the tranny by unbolting it and dropping it down. This is the part I'm talking about. Attachment 535497 Attachment 535498 Simple enough to swap out but at this time I realized my transmission wiring was about two feet too short to reach the sensor on the turbo tranny vs the NA tranny and would have to be extended |
7 Attachment(s)
Day 13 (and 14?)
When I first tried to hookup my alternator I accidentally ripped the wiring because it was too short. I was trying to avoid any wiring during this project so I was really pissed off when it happened and put it off for a while. But when I realized I had to extend 7 wires to reach the transmission sensors I accepted the fact and went for it all at once. The alternator wiring was easy enough to reach but a couple of the transmission wires were deep in the engine bay. The others I was able to pull up pretty far to access them. Attachment 535499 Attachment 535500 A photo of the car at this point. In my photos the intercoolers comes off and on so many times because there's always more to do below it. Attachment 535501 I'd say I've kept the place fairly organized throughout all of this Attachment 535502 Transmission wires extended and then covered in the loom Attachment 535504 Attachment 535506 Attachment 535507 one problem I noticed when trying to hook it all up was that on my NA transmission the sensor has two bullet connectors and one male one female white connector. But on the new sensor it's two bullet and two female connectors. So I hooked up one for now and later when I start the engine I can mess with these to see which connector needs to be soldered. Still annoying though because I thought it was all done with. |

Day 14
On day 14 I got in my AEM failsafe gauge which I was pretty excited about. I dont have any plans for the actual failsafe function yet, I know I've read good and bad things but my main focus is that it can monitor wideband afr boost so I don't need to buy multiple gauges. Attachment 535508 Attachment 535509 Planning to mount it to the a-pillar later Attachment 535510 I swapped the fan bolts and the pulleys for the AC and power steering. Attachment 535517 When I went to torque the bolts for the pulley though my torque wrench messed up and snapped off one of the bolts?! So I had to pull them back off and luckily I was able to undo the bolt with some vice grips and quickly go buy another. I didn't try torquing then again. Attachment 535518 Attachment 535519 Hooked up some transmission wiring and the starter wires. Also attached the lower oil cooler line Attachment 535520 Attachment 535521 Attachment 535522 One other day I don't know when but prior to here my buddy came over and together we hooked up the ecu wiring. It was super tricky and I had to guide him by looking through the engine bay with his head under the passengers footwell. So with that in place I put the interior back together Attachment 535523 Attachment 535524 Attachment 535525 |

Day 15
Day 15 was more of one hour in the evening only. I got in my banzai racing dual belt pulley for the alternator (since the air pump is removed), two new belts, NGK spark wires and used turbo axle shafts. The only part I don't have now is the exhaust I think? Attachment 535526 Attachment 535527 |

Day 16
I got to work dealing with my leaky fuel lines. The previous weekend I tried to cut my feed fuel line to put in a flex fuel hose as a temporary patch. However when I did this it broke one foot down and started leaking at another section and I got fed up and just left it. So during the week I bought 25 feet of flex fuel hose to replace both my feed and return lines from near the fuel tank up to near the engine bay. I just cut at both sections and clamped it on and zip tied it along the brake/old fuel lines. This is a temporary fix as I really need consistent fuel to test out the engine when it's ready and I'm getting really tired of the fuel smell in my garage. Although the fuel was siphoned out when it first started leaking there was still a bit left that slowly dropped. Oh I didn't mention, the fuel started leaking right after we put in the engine. I guess one of the jack stand placements touched on the rusty fuel lines and that did it. Unfortunate but just another obstacle in this project Attachment 535528 Attachment 535529 Attachment 535530 Attachment 535531 I used wire cutters to pinch the lines shut and break them off, then I used a pipe cutter to make a clean cut. I guess later ill have to get/rent a tool to make that.. Ridge.. The name is totally blanking right now. Anyway then I just used hose clamps to attach it. At the front I did the same thing for the return line, but for the feed I just attached the line to the fuel filter. Attachment 535532 Attachment 535533 The result: Attachment 535534 Attachment 535535 Attachment 535536 Attachment 535537 Attachment 535538 After that I filled the tranny fluid. I managed to track down some redline mt-90 fluid at a local shop finally. Didn't realize it would start leaking from the output shaft so I had to throw on the driveshaft after. I guess I never noticed when taking out the driveshaft since the tranny fluid was drained prior. Attachment 535539 Attachment 535540 Attachment 535541 Next problem of the day was that the fuel tank has stopped releasing when pulling the lever so I pulled apart the interior and moved the release cable one notch further so it has an extra millimeter of pull. That seemed to do the trick. Attachment 535542 A few weeks before I had tried to pull out the NA throttle cable but had such a difficult time releasing the tabs holding it To the firewall that I just gave up. Now I just broke them with pliers and pulled it through. I installed the turbo throttle cable but then realized I had no idea how it was mounted to the engine and couldn't find any diagrams. I google searched images of engine bays and many had different setups so I'll just have to improvise once everything is in. I also noticed that I didn't have the bracket which holds the part of throttle cable near the throttle body and adjusts the tension. I took the bracket off my old engine and bent it 90 degrees and installed it. It seemed good enough at first but there way way too much slack. I don't know what the oem bracket looks like but it is probably about an inch and a half further away. I'll have to make one. Not really my strength. |

Day 17
Got to work making the new throttle cable bracket to bolt into the upper intake manifold. I used an L-shaped metal bracket and my NA bent bracket to make a diagram as well as looking at the thread on here for using an NA throttle cable for a turbo setup to get an idea of the shape it needed to be. As I said in the previous post it needed to be about 1.5 inches away from my bent bracket. Made it and installed it. It looks really choppy but it seems to work great. That is, without the engine actually running to try it out. Attachment 535543 That was sortof the final problem in my mind before assembling the rest of the engine components so I got to work putting everything else back in. Attachment 535544 Installed the power steering and belt, fan shroud, fan. Attachment 535545 Attachment 535546 Attachment 535547 Attachment 535548 Installed the new k&n drop in filter and the air box Attachment 535549 From there everything was pretty much in place engine wise. Attachment 535550 I decided I wanted to try and run it. So I filled the rest of the oil and then when I filled the coolant it started to leak from the filler neck where the thermostat is. This sucked because stores were closed and I didn't have a gasket or gasket maker. I tried to run the engine anyways though just for a few seconds. I couldn't get it to start though? There's a video on my instagram (mike_n_associates). Some of my theories as to why it didn't start are that I didn't prime the fuel lines and the tank had been completely emptied. I'm going to try next weekend to depressurize and prime the fuel lines hopefully that will start. If not then I have a whole list of problems that the Haynes manual suggests and I hope it's nothing broken component wise. I still need to install the walbro fuel pump but I plan on doing that after the engine runs at least once. |

Everything installed! With some problems to work out.
Attachment 535553 I'm pretty upset that I didn't take a before photo. But it was super dirty. |
Managed to get the engine started yesterday for the first time! Someone pointed out that the fuel lines were reversed. However when I was trying to diagnose this problem I noticed that the trailing 2 coil is not working and isn't giving a spark so the engine will probably be misfiring even when it is idling properly.
However, after a few minutes of trying to get it to idle, my starter motor shorted out or blew up or something and a bunch of sparks shot out from under the vehicle. This ignited some fuel which had spilled when I swapping the fuel lines and started a small fire in the engine bay near the fuel filter. Luckily I had a fire extinguisher nearby and managed to put it out quickly. I will post a video of the first engine start in a few minutes. It is just uploading to vimeo now. |
https://vimeo.com/98889437
Here is the video of the first start. Engine oil and coolant leaking everywhere.. tachometer not working about 1k rpm.. interior features such as climate control and turn signals working even when the car is off.. but it STARTED! |

Got my BC coilovers installed yesterday and they're so dope! Instant 2 inch reduction in wheel gap and no more 6 inches of play when you push down on the body haha. I didn't play with the height yet I just installed them as they came out of the box because I still need to move the car around a lot.
Attachment 536349 BC in the front, stock in the rear Attachment 536350 Wheel gap front with BCs installed Attachment 536351 Wheel gap rear with stock Attachment 536352 Attachment 536354 I wanted to put on my other rims but as I'm still diagnosing problems with the car I don't want it sitting and getting flat spots. Also it's easier to take the stock rims off quickly without caring too much. I didn't have a chance to take a photo of the whole car at its new height because as soon as I had the wheels on and the car was on the ground my buddy came by and we had the car back up again. Attempted to drop the diff without dropping the subframe but it was near impossible. My frame and out frame area for jacking the car are both so weak that I couldn't find a place for the stands. Finally found a suitable area and dropped out the subframe. Attachment 536363 Oh yeah also worked on trying to unbend my hood. There's only so much I can do because the paints chipped and there are multiple creases Attachment 536371 Attachment 536378 |
6 Attachment(s)
Swapped out the diff and the axle shafts then managed to get the subframe back up into it's place which was really tricky on my own. Would've been way easier to have someone else guiding. Hooked the brake lines back up sway bar and everything else. Then filled the diff and hooked up the driveshaft.
Attachment 536544 Attachment 536545 Still waiting on my new starter and I still need to install the fuel pump. I'm leaving the dtss eliminates for later I just wanted to get the car back on the ground before I left it again. Attachment 536546 No more wheel gap! I need to get my actual rims on but I don't want to leave it sitting and get a flat spot. Attachment 536547 Attachment 536548 Attachment 536549 |
subframe is a beeotch by yourself. I used 2 jacks and it made life a LOT easier. Although, most of my battle was solid bushings vs the rubber ones from factory. Nice work so far. Our cars are twins, although yours has a turbo engine in it, my turbo engine sits in the corner of the garage while I wait for my wallet to go out of town so I can spend money without it knowing.
