This is one stellar build! You're really not messing around here. This may be the first of its kind. I wonder how the car will handle when its complete and aligned.

 

Super curious to how this turns out. I saw something like this that was done by a Japanese magazine when the RX-8 first came out, but hasn't been done in the US that I know of.

 

So...hows the build coming? we need moar!!

When my car is all done up, we should do a comparison of a double wishbone F&R FB vs. a properly done up McPherson Strut and Solid Axle FB (mine). It'd be awesome to see how the cars perform differently and document it all for the 1st Gen guys.

Hey y’all, its been a minute. Basically I sold off all my other projects so this build will receive my full attention and updates should be pretty regular from here on out. Also the renesis found a new home in non wrecked rx8 so the fb is gonna get something a bit more, uh... German. yeah.











Im not shooting for any competitive rulebook so ill just be adding the necessities for street driving (no cage bars running through the firewall) however this setup should allow for a full roll cage down the road.

 

 

The original interior was trashed after sitting out in the Texas heat for nearly 15 years, and clean fb part are becoming exceedingly difficult to find. I think a retrofit looks like the right choice











After beefing up the suspension, I figured she'll do well with a bit more torque and NA rotarys just dont do it for me, so I’m going with an inline 6. Yep, that’s a bmw gearbox.

 

I'm still interested but get ready you're gonna have a lot of hate aimed at you now. lol

Do you have the RX8 seats mounted? If so, what bracket did you use and is the passenger seat at the same height as the FB seats?

 

This is cool I can see your fab skills have increased over the project as well. In for the flaming when you post pics of the BMW engine in there.

 

I haven’t got around to mounting them yet but just from looking at them in the car the outer rear seat mounting holes will have to be shortened about 3/4" to sit flat. its definitely not a bolt in application but ill try to run through the mounting process in detail next week.

 

Its been a busy week, but the motor is mounted up without any subframe or oil pan trimming. Im using an s52 from an e36 M3. Now its no s54, but I picked up the motor, trans and complete chassis wiring for under a grand. Everything fit up better than i had hoped and the front suspension is basically complete.













I’musing a miata brake booster and master cylinder, they’re almost identical.

 

The rx8 steering rack was about 3" too low, so it was either cut the oil pan to fit the massive EPS, or use another rack.



I had a few lying around so I did some frankenstiening..



It all boiled down to a miata manual steering rack mated to e36 tie rods with extended inner rods.

 

The left engine mount arm needed some fine trimming to fit the miata steering column

 

She's starting to look like a car.. *zips up flame suit*
