Finally got the go ahead to start prepping mah car for paint. Here are the pics of the car in its current condition. We are going to paint the car its original color, and the code is U6 (Misty Blue Mettalic), its a very nice color. The paint may look fine in the pics but its a Maaco job, so that makes are job a tid bit harder due to lower quality paint but it'll turn up fine. For those who are interested I guarantee you won't be disappointed

my pops is a painter so he has got that part covered and I am in Fayette County

Many body shops, especially Maaco, back in the 90s and into early 2000's used Acrlyic paints with no hardener. They don't last nearly as long and with no hardener in them they are almost sure to wrinkle and lift when you try to shoot new paint over top. The only way to do it strip it all off back to the factory paint and go from there....

Thanks for that info! I always thought a Maaco job was low quality due to the lack of prep work. I didn't know the Maaco paints were inferior to the type the factory used.

prep work is also bad too, the tape lines are horrible, and they don't remove any parts for the paint process. any way here are the pics of the front end after the parts have been removed. We also took off the moldings on the sides, took off the door panel on the drivers side, removed the "vents" on the sides, disconnected the rear glass and sanded the front bumper.

 

Here are the pics of the "vents" that i mentioned, the front bumper, and the drivers side door. Oh and the to 82transam, we are gonna sand down a lot, but we have a thing for the paint, I think its called "bite" by either Sherwin Williams or PPG, its supposed to "bite" through the other paint into the metal. We used it on my brothers GTI. Lucky for me there are not a lot of dents for a near 30 year old car .

 

Well the prep work sucks too lol, but yeah, that crap paint they went to after laquer paint started getting phased out just plain sucks, especially in the early days when guys didn't mix hardener in it... Makes it a real nightmare to repaint now that we have good paint again to work with lol. It wasn't just Maaco that used it though, was pretty common everywhere unfortunatly.

Bite eh? I'll have to ask about that next time I'm buying paint. I'd be curious how that would eat through the old paint without making it wrinkle. Anyway, good luck with the sanding, always a tedious task...

This bite thing is actually a primer (turns out it is by Sherwin Williams, and its fairly expensive), sorry i forgot to mention that. My dad says that this is the only thing that Sherwin Williams has that is actually good. Here are the pics of the parts that we used it on in my bros GTI, the quarter panel was previously painted as were the Front and rear bumper, thus explaining why we used it. PLease excuse the car for being dirty, it just rained.

 

Was that color sanded? It looks like a mirror.

 

yes it was wet sanded and buffed, but we aren't too happy with the buff job, we will probably redo that.

 

I guess you could call this a self bought Christmas present, bought 3 tokico blues and 4 springs(Suspension Technique) for 170, would have been 4 struts for 235 but the guy lost the forth , but he gave me the full price in return so I may just buy one from Respeed if this guy does not find the last strut. Umm we removed one door, removed the rear glass, the tail lights and im almost done with the rear bumper, we are gonna start sanding everything very soon, we just took a break (Christmas and all that fun stuff). Here are the pics that I currently have in my possession, I will be posting more up in a few hours with the better camera.

 

sanded the other bumper and the lower valance of the front bumper, now we shall begin prepping the car itself I will post pics when i get them.

nice, here are the pics of the bumpers in primer (they will be sanded once more and reprimered), the left quarter panel has been sanded and some bondo has been put onto the the biggest dents. we have removed the whole rear end ( the 7 just looks sad without it lol). Tomorrow we are gonna do some more sanding, remove the moldings on top of the car, and clean up where the side moldings had been placed. Here are the pics:

lol they do, sorry about the pics (i forgot). anyways we havn't done anything in the last two days, my pops has been gettin here more tired than usual so we took a small break. what do yall think of black dragon autos outer window moldings?

 

So we have not done much besides sand the front bumper again, im just going to post some better quality pics. I also just started swapping out the struts and springs, IMa paint the wheel well area to make them look purty

the only thing you need to make it even better is a disc brake rear end. I got one for sale
