Question Backfire/Afterfiring on 1980 rx-7 (FB?)

As cool as the backfire is on my car, I live in a sleepy neighborhood where most of my neighbors are retirees, and I love them too much to be waking them up at 7 in the morning when I go to school. What do I add/remove from my car to get rid of it? I'm ultra-new to the car community, so please be patient lmao

welcome to the board.

check your timing
check your consumable ignition components
check for major exhaust leaks (nearer to the engine as opposed to the tailpipe)

My stupid brother when he was 15 figured out how to make his car back fire. So he went around the ethnic side of town and made the car backfire while sticking an unloaded gun out the car window.

Seriously, it could be many things. I'm a fan of checking the sparkplugs insulator color. Or it could be the shutter valve if it backfires on deceleration. Backfiring is usually a symptom of unburned fuel in the exhaust. The pre cat is supposed to take care of most of that. So it could be the pre cat air pump ain't working.
