Austin's FB TII Swap - Details and Pics Aplenty
#251
damn dood if i was a rich sonofabitch i'd buy that and hold on to it until you're better off financially.
its my favorite color, and turbo.
don't budge on the price - it will be hard to move at $7k but i dont want you to sell it really. So you should probably say like $7500 or something.
or add a leading 1 to that number.

I'll send you a PM here in a minute.
The engine that is in the car (S4 TII) was rebuilt at a shop. The invoice reads as such:
04-13-04
87 Mazda RX7 83,430mi 1.3 Turbo
$450.00 - Remove and reinstall 1.3 engine
$375.00 - Transfer parts needed from new engine to original engine
$200.00 - 90 day labor warranty ASAP invoice
$180.47 - USF Duggan invoice
$025.00 - Shop supplies
$074.42 - Parts and accessories
$006.06 - Sales tax
$1310.95 - TOTAL
When I acquired the car it had 117,xxxmi on the chassis with the original cluster, engine and transmission as far as I know.
So the mileage on the engine should be around the 34,xxxmi mark - but like I said it's at 110psi on each rotor face when I tested it.
Build Update
In an updated actual build idea (that's what this is for afterall - ) I have found that I have a wicked steering issue. I used the bar that crosses from the steering box to the passenger side of the steering linkage as leverage for putting the engine back in and I'm afraid that I may have bent it severely or I'm resting something on the bar so the steering sticks really badly now. I know the FB steering isn't the best, but mine's always been alright until now. Will hopefully find time today to to take a look at it but we will see.
I'll keep pressing on as if the car isn't going to sell guys, don't worry about that

It's not that the price is *too* high, but it is a high price for an FB, swapped or not. While, to me, FB's are priceless most people seem to lose interest when the price gets too much over the $5000 mark it seems. That's just me making observations over the years. The big dollar first gens are the well preserved SA's and GSL-SE's.
Anyway, I'm hoping I'm right about all that and you don't sell it, lol you would regret it for sure

Aaand the bombshell.
I did end up trading the FB for a bike and cash in the end.
Friday I went down to meet up with the guy and it all went well. Saw that he had an 84 GSL there with an Evo 8, mentioned a TII, and his baby - a 93 Touring FD that was built to the sky. Let him drive the car and look over the paperwork, then I rode the bike and we ended up trading. I did shed some tears over leaving the car later Friday night and my fiance was glad to see me show some emotion.
I know I made the right decision though. I'm sitting here on a new bed that I had to buy, in a new place to live (my grandparent's basement) surrounded with other things that I had to buy in order to move. There is no humanly way possible I would have been able to afford these things without the cash I got with the trade. I didn't have enough in the bank account to float the cost because of the FB and the constant upgrading and modifying. I've always known selling the car would be the end of the project because I would never finish it. I think for right now I am happy with the final result. I started school at the U of M today and it's so nice not worrying about what I'm going to have to do to the car this winter and how much it is going to cost. I don't need to schedule time to work on it anymore and it's so easy to roll around in the DD and the bike versus taking the 7 around down here with no power steering and it not having an exhaust or front plate.
All in all I'm now in the category of "used to have a rotary" and I'm ok with that.
My dream car has always been an FD and I will eventually get one and I'm ok with that. This car opened up the door for me and I will walk through it someday either with an FD after college or an FF (if it's the rotary powered coupe in 2016ish).
Eventually I'll pick up a First Gen and 3 rotor swap it though
I will still post up my writing tutorial and some helpful links for others here as well.

Hate to see you get rid of your FB. I've been watching this thread silently since you started the swap, I think I'm as attached to the car as you are.

I had my first 7 for 1 week. I was without 1 for about a year. You're a rotor head. You'll get another... you want an FD... Well, all you work created a value a local pounced on... AND he's a qualified owner..... I enjoyed your build thread. Best wishes in your forward path...

You know it! I still have a full FC subframe that I'll be keeping for the future 1st Gen build
Ask and ye shall receive:
It's a 2001 Yamaha YZF-R6 with 97hp dyno-tuned and supporting mods. It's a very fun and fast bike, I've been riding it daily down here to school because the locations for motorcycle contract parking are 10x better than the contract I have for the car. It's a blast and I've always wanted one so I can't complain

That bike is sick - i love the colors! Those wheels in particular, with the white letter, and the rest of the bike being stealth with no logos.
BUT i gotta give you some **** - you get rid of the RX7 because it wont be a good commuter or winter car for college..... only to replace it with 2 less wheels and 2000 pounds less weight / traction.
It took me 8-9 years before I came back to the RX scene, but I came back

Nice looking bike. Be careful out there...and wear appropriate gear as most motorcycle accidents aren't rider's fault. And yo'llu hear this alot...it's not a matter of IF you'll have a crash but WHEN. I was lucky enough to get rid of mine before that happened but I did drop it once in a parking lot trying to park where I didn't notice an oily spot and slipped.

Yama hahahaha ha... more Japanese fun stuff. I used to have Viragos. The best 2 wheel advice I can share is to be aware that you are invisible... People look for cars, a bike is less than that perception threshold. Twice in my driving experience, I have been surprised by a bike I did not see (I beat myself up for a few days when it happens), and I think I'm an aware driver.

Yeah, I did ditch the 7 for a bike and cash but it's what had to happen. It's not going to be sold till the spring so I'll get some fall riding in and I've enjoyed it so far but it's not a 7.
Glad to hear you left the 7 scene as well and returned - I appreciate that
Well it was either the 7 or school ultimately in the end.
School is infinitely more important than a car to me - I'll own many cars (and 7's) in my life and I'll build a cleaner and faster car than this one in the future

I'm already scheming to get a cheap local 7 that a current forum member stole from me last winter for cheap

Hey Austin, this is your FD owning neighbor Daryl. Awesome thread dude, at least I know where to walk now just in case I need a hand wrenching on the FD! haha. I hope you get back to the rotary scene man, I never have anyone to cruise with, especially now that my friend blew up his supercharged cobra. I don't know if you still have a bike, but I'm also always looking for people to ride with.
It's kind of funny, I watched your youtube video, we take the same exact route for test runs. good old flamingo!

Car's for sale on Craigslist locally, ad is here:
FB rx7 Turbo 2 swap Minneapolis/St.Paul
Just looking to help out the seller and see if anyone would like to pick it up. I don't have the money right now and wish I did with all my heart. Would like to see it go to a collector or enthusiast versus some drifter kid who'll smash it into a wall.
Thanks for all the support guys,
Austin
